Background - Seattle Mariners
Seattle recovered quickly from the MLB strike in 1994 by taking two of the next three American League West division titles coming close to the World Series in 1995. Shockingly, Mariners tickets are meaningful this season, as the club fights to bring the first division title to Safeco Field since 2001. The team has done this with pitching that has been so great that it has made up for the lower tier hitting.
The pitching actually ranks first in the American League in ERA, opponents batting average, and saves; third in WHIP; and fourth in quality starts. Jarrod Washburn has been a enjoying a season of redemption, Felix Hernandez has been pitching like it was his rookie season, Erik Bedard is having a career year (though he is now injured), and Jason Vargas has found a spot in the rotation with a solid performance after a year wasted thanks to injury. The bullpen has a few good set up pitchers and has rallied behind David Aardsma as the closer.
The hitting must get better for the Mariners to overtake the Angels and Rangers. Ichiro Suzuki is once again in the running for batting champion of the AL, Russell Branyon is on pace to set new career highs in home runs, batting average, and RBI, and that is where the good news ends. Endo Chavez, the third best bat on the team just ended his season because of his ACL and few other players are hitting well enough to advance even a single runner. Mariners tickets may be a hot item right now, but if the team is unable to find some more support in the batting order then the great pitching will have all been wasted.
