Background - Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners began as an expansion franchise in 1977 and, like many expansion teams, struggled for a number of years before finding their footing. The Mariner franchise struggled in the American League West until the ball club began to show promise in the early ‘90s.
The Mariners had begun building a strong core in the late ‘80s with center fielder Ken Griffey, Jr, tall, lanky fireballer Randy Johnson, third baseman Edgar Martinez, and right fielder Jay Buhner. The club would begin to make a run for the American League West title in 194, but would not get a chance to finish the season because of the infamous season-ending players' strike.
Manager Lou Piniella would take the club from the team left off the season before and finished strong in September behind a "Refuse to Lose" slogan that closed the 13-game gap between the Mariners and the first place Angels.
The season came down to a one-game playoff between the two clubs, one which found the Mariners winning 9-1. The Mariners continued the push into by defeating the Yankees in the American League Divisional Series before losing to the Cleveland Indians in the American League Championship Series.
The Mariners of the late ‘90s had successful runs powered by the bats of Ken Griffey, Jr., who would win the 1997 AL MVP, a young Alex Rodriguez, and handful of others. The pitching always lacked depth, whether in the starting rotation or the bullpen, and the Mariners would win one more division title in 1997. Again the team would fall in the ALCS.
The 21st century began with a new field, Safeco Field, and the trade of Ken Griffey, Jr. to the Reds. Though many believed this would be the downfall of the club, the Mariners responded by winning the wild card in 2000 and made it to the ALCS, where they would lose once again.
Alex Rodriguez left the club in free agency over the offseason, and once again the Mariners were expected to fall into the cellar in the AL West. However, Rookie of the Year Ichiro Suzuki and second baseman Bret Boone took the Mariners to the playoffs on the strength of a 116-win season and an AL West crown. Once again the club would lose in the ALCS, but the surprise winning season set up tow more years of contention.
Unfortunately the AL Wets was a deep division in 2002 and 2003 with the Angels and the Athletics challenging for the West title. The Mariners are now coming off a short rebuilding period that followed soon after the 2003 season, but is starting to look up.

2008 Season Preview
|
Despite the 2-15 collapse at the end of the season that cost the Seattle Mariners a playoff spot, the club looks ready for competition in 2008.
Felix Hernandez and Erik Bedard star on a staff that must perform to their capabilities after last season. Jarrod Washburn especially must redeem himself. The pitcher was expected to be the ace of the staff but he pitched well below his paycheck in 2007. If Washburn returns to form and the rest of the staff pitches well, the Angels have competition in the weak West.
The Mariners signed All Star right fielder Ichiro Suzuki to a five-year extension to add some confidence to an offense that failed to score in 2007. First baseman Richie Sexton, third baseman Adrian Beltre, and left fielder Raul Ibanez provide power to a lineup that could definitely use it.
The Mariners will play there ninth year in Safeco Field and hope that the underperforming team from 2007 wakes up and makes the 81-home game schedule worth watching. See the Mariners meet expectation and shoot for beyond with tickets from Online Seats.
