The leadoff hitter will then rely on right fielder Will Venable, third baseman Chase Headley, and left fielder Carlos Quentin to get him from first to home plate. Those names may not inspire confidence, but they are the players going forward. Venable is a speedster, Headley posted a decent batting average and OBP last season, and Quentin has the power to hit a few homeruns at Petco Park. Typically, the Padres season is defined by its pitching staff. They would have a great starting rotation and an enviable bullpen. In 2012, San Diego does not have clear superstar, but may have enough talent in the sum of its parts to avoid last place. De facto ace Tim Stauffer is a solid control pitcher, Clayton Richards will benefit from the cavernous dimensions of Petco Park, Dustin Moseley is another control pitcher but suffered from a lack of run support last summer, late-bloomer Cory Luebke could emerge the best pitcher of the bunch and the league strikeout leader, and Edinson Volquez is a hard-throwing wild card waiting to make a comeback since 2009. The Padres bullpen is no longer the best and the defense has mixed reviews, with some fearing the weakness up the middle of the infield and some feeling each position is solid. The San Diego Padres come into the 2012 schedule a club clearly building for the future, but magnanimously trying to give the fans something to root for here and now.

The Padres opened the season with him as their number one pitcher. There is not much more competition for the ace spot. The rest of the Padres rotation goes Clayton Richard, Aaron Harang, and Dustin Mosely. The Optimistic San Diego Padres Fan Says… The Padres have a potential ace in Clayton Richard and team has enough speed to make a run at the NL West division title.
