Background - San Diego Padres
The Padres were able to produce a few stars in the ‘70s though. Dave Winfield led the team in home runs and RBIs throughout the decade and Gaylord Perry brought home tow Cy Young Awards. The team even had a young Ozzie Smith, but would trade him before their first pennant in 1984.
1984 began on a sad note for the team. Owner Ray Kroc died of heart disease. The season was not lost though. The Padres finished 92-70 with a lineup that had very little power. Future Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn won his first batting trophy that season and would one of the most dangerous players in a lineup that included Steve Garvey, Gary Templeton, and Alan Wiggins.
The club would win its first National League Wets division title and come back from 0-2 series deficit to beat the Cubs in the NLCS. The Padres met the 104-win Tigers in the World Series and bowed out in five games, losing to Tigre pitcher Jack Morris twice in the series.
The Padres struggled after the pennant season, but seemed to develop the talent that would find success elsewhere in the league. Catcher Benito Santiago, second baseman Roberto Alomar, outfielder Gary Sheffield, first baseman Fred McGriff, and shortstop Tony Fernandez would begin their promising careers in San Diego before being shipped out and winning championships for other teams.
1998 gave the Padres their second pennant. The club relied on the talents of position players Gwynn, Ken Caminiti, Wally Joyner, Greg Vaugh, and Steve Finley and pitchers Kevin Brown, Andy Ashby, and Trevor Hoffman to upset the Braves in the NLCS. The club could not reproduce the heroics of the NLCS and lost to the Yankees in the World Series.

2008 Season Preview
|
 The Padres of 2008 are a good team with good veterans that is hoping will play well enough to lead to the fourth straight playoff appearance.
Staff Ace Jake Peavy leads a rotation that has solid veterans in Greg Maddox and Chris Young. The bullpen is set with closer Trevor Hoffman and superb setup men Heath Bell and Cla Meedith.
Tadahito Iguchi, Jim Edmonds, and Brian Giles are being counted on to provide veteran leadership to a young lineup that includes first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, short stop Khali Green, and second-year player Kevin Kouzmanoff.
