Background - Philadelphia Phillies
The lone victory came against the Royals in 1980 in six games. The Phillies won the NL East title and played the Astros in the National League World Series. The Phillies and Astros would play into extra innings four of five games of the best of five game series. The Astros had a 2-1 series lead, but could not clinch the series. The Phillies won the series on a hit by center fielder Garry Maddox that drove in the winning run in the 10th inning.
The World Series found the Phillies huge underdogs, but the offense of Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose won the series in six. Mike Schmidt had already won the NL MVP that season and collected a World Series MVP for his .381 average during the series. The win made the Phillies the last of the 16 original teams to win a World Series title.
The World Series would not turn things around though, and the Phillies would descend into drug scandals and the basement of the NL East. The club returned to the World Series with a team John Kruk called "24 morons and one Morman." The team featured shaggy hair, mullets, Darren Daulton, Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, Curt Schilling, and the clean-shaven Dale Murphy. Unfortunately, the Toronto Blue Jays won their second World Series in a row and Mitch Williams received death threats for throwing the curve ball that left the yard and lost the sixth and final game of the series.

2007 Season Preview
|
 The Philadelphia Phillies came back to take the NL East last season with help from a horrendous finish by the Mets, who led most of the season. The team hopes to carry the momentum of last season into this season and win the East outright.
The Phillies have the pitching to repeat the feat. Cole Hamels went 15-5 last season and is the staff ace. He maintained a low ERA despite hitting the batter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. Brett Myers is next in the rotation and has the cutting fastball and great splitter to throw hitters off. Jamie Moyer is still pitching and, more importantly, still pitching well. Closer Brad Linge was one the keys to the NL East title last season and figures to solidify the bullpen again in 2008.
The Phillies will have plenty of run production coming from last year's NL MVP Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and power hitting shortstop Jimmy Rollins. The 2008 season will bring plenty of excitement to Citizens Bank Park and the fans will have 81 home games on the schedule to check out if the Phillies were a one-year wonder last season or if the team is for real.
