Background - Philadelphia Phillies
The team had few early bright spots, winning a World Series in 1915, but quickly falling back into the middle or bottom of the standings after finances ruined the chance to repeat. It took years, but the Phillies finally returned to the World Series after 35 years, in 1950. That team, led by Dick Sisler, one the pennant on the last day of the regular season schedule, but the magic could not be maintained as the Yankees asserted their dominance. Finally in 1980 the Philadelphia Phillies broke through and ended their long struggle to win a championship. Mike Schmidt had his first MVP seasons and Steve Carlton won his third of four Cy Young Awards. 2009 Midseason Update

 The Philadelphia Phillies began the season schedule with a slow start, but luckily the rest of the NL East was as much in disarray (mainly thanks to injuries) and now the Phillies are again in first place. Phillies tickets have been good this season for a team that can kill the ball and post enough runs to overcome the dreadful pitching at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies batting order may only post a very middle of the road .259 batting average, but they come in first in slugging at .454. The team has some speed and the batters have a discerning eye at the plate too, making them one of the most dangerous lineups in the either league.
Any discussion of the Phillies offense must begin with Raul Ibanez. Ibanez was signed to replace Pat Burrell and has far surpassed last season's left fielder. He is hitting .312 with 22 home runs and 59 RBI. For a while it looked like he was going to threaten Triple Crown-worthy numbers, but his average took a little dive. After Ibanez the Phillies have sluggers like Ryan Howard, Chase Utely, and Jayson Werth. Shane Victorino, Werth, and Jimmy Rollins all have good speed and technique along the base paths. Basically Philllies tickets are great for those fans that love offense.
For fans that love pitching, the Phillies are not for them. The only major statistical category that the staff does not rank near the bottom in the National League is saves despite Brad Lidge's struggles this season. The team ERA is surely inflated by the hitter-friendly dimensions of Citizens Bank Park as is just about every other pitching stat. Still this roster of pitchers manages to earn a few victories.
The fact remains that though as a pitcher for a team like the Phillies, the Rockies, and the Rangers you know that your team is going to score runs in bunches, but the hit you take is still psychologically damaging. The Phillies have one pitcher in the starting rotation with an ERA below 4.00 (J.A. Happ), but he has only had six starts so it is a matter time (just a few home games) before he joins the rest of the staff with an ERA that would land him in the minor leagues for just about any other team. The bullpen has been alright, but with Lidge imploding this season, fans with Phillies tickets should be a little worried about Philadelphia's postseason chances once it is pennant time in the baseball season.
