Background - New York Mets
The decade wore on with finishes in last or next to last place until 1969. The season started out with a young roster unable to capitalize on the talent of Tom Seaver, Jerry Grote, and Bud Harrelson. Tickets were in despair by the middle of August. The Mets were doing better, in third place instead of last, but they were still 10 games out with the season coming to a close. A hot streak at the end of the season had them finish in first place and upset victories in the National League Championship Series and the World Series had brought the Mets from "Lovable Losers" to the "Miracle Mets".
The seasons since have followed the same pattern. The Mets and their season tickets holders will suffer through a series of bad seasons before the talented club will break out and make a deep playoff run, sometimes landing them in the World Series. The Mets won last in 1986 with Tom Gordon, Darryl Strawberry, and Howard Johnson and visited the series last in 2000 with a subway series against the Yankees.

2009 Midseason Update
|
 The New York Mets do not do anything exceedingly well, but are so balanced offensively and defensively that they are remain competitive in the National League West. This is not a bad way to celebrate the inaugural season at Citi Field, with Mets tickets for a team that looks tooled to fight the Phillies throughout the long season schedule, though it would help if the star players would stop landing on the DL. Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and Jose Reyes have all been stricken with injury.
The offense has survived the depletion of its lineup somehow. The team has posted the second best batting average and on base percentage and has managed to drive in 316 runs (seventh in the NL) despite only possessing the ninth best slugging percentage in the league. The team has some speed too, which helps to make up for the lack of power as the stars continue to fall in the Big Apple.
David Wright has remained healthy. Wright has also been the best hitter in the NL this season so far with a .346 average. Manager Jerry Manuel better hope that he has an effect like Manny Ramirez as Alex Cora, Daniel Murphy, and Gary Sheffield try and fill in for the injured stars. Sheffield has proven to be a pleasant surprise, with plenty of pop left in his bat at the age of 40. Murphy has struggled at the plate, but Cora has been very effective with a .281 average since taking up regular duty at shortstop.
The pitching has not been plagued by the same injury bug as of yet. Still despite the decent pitching numbers there are a number of red flags. Johan Santana may have an ERA of 3.22 and 10 quality starts, but he has yet to pitch more than seven and a third innings in an outing. Santana and, surprisingly, Livan Hernandez have been the anchors for the rotation. Johnn Maine and Mike Pelfrey have struggled with ERAs that less than atrocious but still a little scary for Mets fans. The team desperately needs a fifth starter as well. The bullpen in danger of being overworked thanks to the lack of the starting pitchers collective ability to go very far in games. Mets tickets could be playoffs tickets if the team can find some sort of solution to the starting pitcher woes.
