Background - New York Mets
The first season proved to be a disaster. The 40-120 record was the third worst of any team since the turn of the 20th century and the loss total was most since 1899. The loss total still stands today as the lowest mark in the modern baseball era.
Things would continue in those losing ways for the rest of the ‘60s while the cross town Yankees were enjoying there role as perennial title contenders. The late ‘60s found the team building a nucleus of young talent. Tom Seaver won Rookie of the Year in 1967 and he was soon joined by catcher Jerry Grote and shortstop Bud Harrelson.
The 1969 season began like the others in the ‘60s, with an 11-10 loss and a 21-23 record at the end of May. The club improved its play, but still resided in third place 10 games behind the Cubs in the newly formed National League East in mid-August. Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman would then lead an exceptional young pitching staff on a 38-11 tear that brought Mets record to 100-62 and gave them the first NL East division title and put them in the first National League Championship Series against the Braves.
The Mets swept the Hank Aaron and the Atlanta Braves in the best of five game series and went on to the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets were again underdogs. The Mets, by then dubbed the "Miracle Mets," defied the odds and defeated the Orioles easily 4-1. Tom Seaver all but clinched the win by pitching all 10 innings in game four while the Mets won 2-1.

2008 Season Preview
|
 After the late season collapse in 2007, the Mets let Tom Glavine go and signed Johan Santana to replace him as staff ace. The rest of the staff hopes to come together like the rotation of the Miracle Mets. Pedro Martinez returns in 2008 after an injury last year and is joined by young pitchers John Maine and Oliver Perez, both of whom had very good 2007 seasons. Billy Wagner continues to be an effective closer and has two very good middle relievers to keep the game close in Aaron Heilman and Pedro Feliciano.
Third baseman David Wright and center fielder Carlos Beltran will hit for power in the lineup. In fact Wright will hit for power and average and may be an MVP candidate if the Mets play as well as they did for most of last season. Moises Alou and Carlos Delgado are two veterans who can still produce as they approach their final years. Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes can cover the middle of the infield and provide some offense.
