San Francisco Giants

The bulk of the San Francisco Giants history comes from long before Barry Bonds came to town, long before Candlestick was built, and long before the move out to San Francisco. With 17 of the 20 National League pennants and all five World Series victories coming while the team was playing in New York at one of the many versions of the Polo Grounds, the majority of the accolades and the playoff tickets the team has sold exists in the memories of those who saw them play during the first half of the 20th century.

The last such World Series was won in 1954 when the star of the team was Barry Bonds’ godfather Willie Mays was the five-tool player leading the team and winning the NL MVP award. The Giants went 97-57 and ended up sweeping the Cleveland Indians in the fall classic. Most people forget that Giants fan were buying playoff tickets to see an underdog play. The Indians had won a major league best 111 games that year and were deservedly so the favorites.

The history books and the sports highlights remember Willie Mays for “The Catch.” The play in which Willie Mays ran down a ball hit deep to straight away centerfield by Vic Wertz, caught over his shoulder 450 feet from home plate, and twirled around to throw the ball into the infield to keep Larry Doby from scoring from third base. The series also had a number of talented players and Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher to help with the sweep though. Fellow outfielder Monte Irvin finished second batting that season, Larry Jansen, and Sal Maglie were key to turning those playoff tickets into a chance to see the last World Series won by the Giants.

The current squad will need the pitching to remain stellar. Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are solid starters and Brian Wilson has been great when given the chance to save games despite his high ERA. The offense will need to improve dramatically to keep playoff tickets from being entry to a sad sweep. Without Barry Bonds the offense has floundered with Randy Winn, Fred Lewis, Bengie Molina, and Aaron Rowand have no problem getting on base, but the team has troubles getting them past third base.
