Chicago Cubs 2009 Playoffs

Despite the well-documented bad luck of the Chicago Cubs, the years have not been marred completely by futility. The Cubs managed to go to the World Series 10 times between 1906 and 1945. The club only won twice, but playoff tickets saw a team compete the world title fairly often.
The years after the curse barred them from even going to another World Series were tough. The team suffered a breakdown in 1969 that coincided with an incredible Mets run that created the Miracle Mets and made the Cubs the new Lovable Losers. Wrigley Field did not see a playoff game again until 1984. That year Ryne Sandberg won the MVP and Rick Sutcliffe won the Cy Young Award. The awards could not do much more than build hype for the series as tickets were sold to all five games of the NLCS and the Cubs lost to the Padres.
Chicago returned to the postseason five years later with another NL East title, but again lost in the NLCS. This time they lost to the Giants, in five games in a best of seven series. Years of struggle followed, but finally in 1998 the Cubs returned with playoff tickets to Wrigley Field. This time Sammy Sosa’s MVP year and Kerry Wood’s Rookie of the Year Award performance could not help the team overcome the Braves in the first round.
Playoff tickets finally were sold for games beyond one round of playoffs in 2003 when the Chicago Cubs got revenge for the loss in 1998, with a series victory over the Braves, but the infamous Steve Bartman interfered with a foul ball and started a cascade of miscues that took the Cubs from five outs from the World Series to NLCS losers. Instead the Marlins went on to capture their second World Series victory.
Chicago Cubs Background
The season in 2007 saw an incredible turn around as the Chicago Cubs went from last place in the National League Central to first place. The signing of Alfonso Soriano, the firing of manager Dusty Baker, the hiring of Lou Piniella, and the emergence of Carlos Zambrano as an unquestioned ace transformed the sad season from a year before into a season ending with playoff tickets. Unfortunately the Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Cubs in the first round and Chicago was left to try and recollect themselves for the 2008 season.
The Cubs emerged this season as the best balanced club in baseball. Excellent pitching and hitting means that playoff tickets for Cubs fans could reach the World Series. Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, and Rich Harden must continue to dominate on the mound and Ted Lilly needs to make the transition from fringe starting pitcher to a solid player to solidify the staff for the playoff run. Part of the strength of the team is that no individual player is the key to the offense. Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Mark DeRosa, Geovany Soto and Alfonso Soriano all have very respectable numbers across the board. One trip through the lineup can see a game get out of hand for the opposing team. Wrigley Field is looking like the World Series will return and the “Curse of the Billy Goat” will be laid to rest.
