Background - Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals lone World Series came in 1985, though that really is not as long many ball clubs when considering the team has only been playing since 1969. The 1985 title came after the Royals had been in serious playoff contention since their first division title in 1976. The teams of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s developed a rivalry with the Yankees, after the Yanks beat them three straight times in the American League Championship Series, from 1976-1978.
The club continued to fall just short in the ‘80s. The team relied heavily on the bat of third baseman George Brett and a young pitching staff featuring Bret Saberhagen, Mark Gubicza, Charlie Leibrandt, Bud Black, and Danny Jackson. All the disappointment came to an end in 1985 when the Royals when the Western Division for the sixth time in a decade and Bret Saberhagen won the Cy Young Award.
The Royals would play the St. Louis Cardinals in what was dubbed the I-70 Series because both cities were on Interstate 70. The Royals came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series 4-3, with a whopping 11-0 victory in game seven. Young stars Bo Jackson, Tom Gordon, and Kevin Seitzer could not put the Royals over the edge in the remainder of the ‘80s or the early ‘90s as the Royals sported good ball clubs that failed to win a division title.

2008 Season Preview
|
The Kansas City Royals are currently in a youth movement that finds them at the bottom of the ultra-competitive American League Central. The team is counting on Trey Hillman, who managed the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan last season, to help the team climb out of the cellar.
Gil Meche, Zach Greinke, and Brian Bannister are the main three starters for the Royals, although none is very accomplished. Bannister is coming off a year that landed him third in rookie of the year voting, though, and his continued development could add some stability to the thin pitching staff.
The offense is problematic. Left fielder Jose Guillen, catcher Joe Buck, and second baseman Mark Gruzielanek are the only weapons available. Billy Butler show promise, but he is not a sure thing.
The Royals hope to be the latest of the teams to make surprising runs at the playoffs in the Central Division, following the White Sox in 2005, the Tigers in 2006, and the Indians in 2007. The Royals hope Kauffman Stadium will see great baseball this year and in the near future.
