Background - Green Monster
The name Red Sox, chosen by owner John I. Taylor in 1907, is based on an obsolete form of socks, as in the red footwear worn by the team. Previously to that, the team did not have an official nickname and were simply 'the Bostons' or 'the Boston Baseball club'; some newspaper writers referred to them as the Boston Americans or Somersets, but these were unofficial names. The team was never known as the Boston Pilgrims. Current ownership: John Henry and Tom Werner, who paid $660 million and assumed $40 million in debt, in February 2002. The purchase includes Fenway Park and 82 percent of New England Sports Network. The purchase price set a record for a major league baseball franchise.
Fenway Park is the home stadium for the Boston Red Sox baseball club. It is located near and named for the Fenway neighborhood in the heart of Boston, which in turn is named for the nearby fens, or marshes. It opened on April 20, 1912, the same day as the now-defunct Tiger Stadium in Detroit. This makes it the oldest ballpark in active use in Major League Baseball.
The stadium is most famous for the 'Green Monster', the imposing, 37-foot-(11-meter)-tall left field wall, only 310 feet (94.5 meters) from home plate down the left field line. From 1912 to 1933, there was a 10-foot-(3 meter)-high mound that formed an incline in front of the left field wall at Fenway Park, extending from the left-field foul pole to the centerfield flag pole. As a result of the mound, a left fielder in Fenway Park had to play the entire territory running uphill. Boston's first star left fielder, Duffy Lewis, mastered the skill so well that the area became known as Duffy's Cliff. In 1934, Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey arranged to flatten the ground in left field so that Duffy's Cliff no longer existed and became part of the lore of Fenway Park.

2006 Season Preview

Fenway Park has a new look to it -- and the Tigers like it. Instead of the 23-foot net atop the left field wall, better known as the Green Monster, there are seats. There's also a standing-room area behind the seats. That's right; you can now watch a game from atop the Monster.
'It's an awesome view from up there,' said Tigers coach Mick Kelleher, who toured the area with Manager Alan Trammell before Monday night's game. 'That's where I used to hit them -- in batting practice.'
The net had been in place since 1936. Thousands of home runs had been hit into it. Hardly a game ever went by without a home run or two being hit into the net. 'I gave up my share here,' said Tigers telecaster Jack Morris, 'but it never mattered to me where they landed. Gone was gone. This is the place I gave up two grand slams in the same game if I'm not mistaken.'
He wasn't. Bill Buckner hit a grand slam off Morris in the first inning a doubleheader opener on Aug. 7, 1984 at Fenway Park and Tony Armas hit one in the second inning.
Without a new ballpark, the Red Sox are trying to update the old and not destroy the historic flavor of Fenway. They have done it with the club seats behind the plate. They've also done it with rooftop sections behind first.
Now they've done it with the wall. Of course, with a Red Sox payroll of nearly $100 million, the added revenue from the Monster seats doesn't hurt.
The idea has been immensely popular, though. The seats are sold out for every game -- all 260 seats and the 120 standing-room spots.
The front row is the best, of course. Fans can lean over and peer straight down the wall in left. There's really no other seat in the majors like it -- for the simple reason, there's no other Green Monster.
