Background - Florida Marlins
Both those World Series were won from the Wild Card position and each was followed by a fire sale. The first World Series season in 1997 was followed by the inaugural unloading of talent after team management found that the talent needed to win decimated the bottom line.  The Florida Marlins are currently in third place in the most competitive division in the National League, the NL East. The team is within a couple of series sweeps of first place despite a seeming statistical improbability. Marlins tickets have been available so far for a team that struggles to make contact, has iffy pitching, and yet has managed to stick around .500.
Somehow though the team batting average is the 11th best in the NL and the team slugging percentage is 12th best in the NL the Marlins have managed to post the sixth most runs in the NL. The team must score whenever they get someone on base, kind of like how they win the World Series whenever they get into the playoffs.
Fans at Land Shark Stadium have enjoyed watching Hanley Ramirez continue his stellar career and this season is no different. The shortstop is having one of his best years making contact with a .329 average, but has been somewhat down power-wise with only 10 home runs so far. Jorge Cantu and is the lone remaining player able to maintain a decent average. Otherwise, fans with Marlins tickets get to watch as Cody Ross, Jeremy Hermida, Emilio Bonifacio, and Dan Uggla struggle to get hits. Luckily whenever Uggla and Ross do make contact and do not get out they seem to hit homeruns.
The real mystery is how the Florida Marlins are able to maintain a record around .500 with a pitching staff that has been so bad. The team ERA is 12th in the NL and the team has managed to have just 33 quality starts for 11th best in the NL.
The answer may be that starter Josh Johnson is having a tremendous season so far. He has an ERA of 2.66, a healthy K/9 ratio of 7.54, and great WHIP with 1.04. He also has 13 quality starts. Starter Andrew Miller has been steadily improving, going from an ERA near 7.00 in April to an ERA approaching 4.00 in June. Another reason for hope is Sean West, a starter who has served as an excellent replacement in the rotation. The fact is that the Marlins have several very good relievers, but are des a closer. For Florida Marlins tickets to remain as exciting as they are now for a competitive team, the team must find a closer sometime as the schedule moves closer to the All Star break and the true pennant race begins.
