The Miami Marlins are the Florida Marlins after moving from the suburbs to the city. In the 18 seasons the team spent playing out at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens just outside the city limits, the club seemed to be dominated by cycles.

The front office would splurge one season and attract big name free agents to play beside the burgeoning stars. That team would not be able to take the division, but it would land the wild card. From this wild card spot the baseball team would make a postseason run and end up winning the World Series. Then, after throwing a parade and celebrating the big win, the front office would dismantle the roster and begin the cycle over again. The Marlins completed this twice, once in 1997 and again in 2003.

In 1997 the club had veteran stars like Moises Alou, Bobby Bonilla, Gary Sheffield, and Kevin Brown paired with home grown talent like Charles Johnson, Edgar Renteria, and Livan Hernandez. Florida swept the Giants in the NLDS, took out the Braves in 6 in the NLCS, and beat the Indians in 6. Hernandez would win the World Series MVP and Renteria would become a superstar.

The 2003 World Series Marlins brought in Ivan Rodriguez, Mark Redman, and Juan Pierre to play with Derrek Lee, Dontrelle Willis, and Brad Penny. Once again, the Marlins began the postseason by beating up on the Giants in the NLDS. Then they met the Chicago Cubs and famously advanced after the Cubs fell apart in Game Six (the Cubs blamed it on Steve Bartman). In the World Series, the Marlins met the Yankees, ultimately winning in 6. Josh Beckett, the back end starter during the regular season would dominate and win the Word Series MVP.

The Marlins are trying to rebuild the farm system and put the baseball team in position to make a run from the wild card spot once again. This time, the Marlins will be playing in the city of Miami at Marlins Park, perhaps to make the commute from the stadium to the parade route a little more manageable.
