The Colorado Rockies are looking to improve on their last place finish of the 2013 season. It appears that management has made some moves that could give the Rockies more depth. More depth along with the maturing of some of their younger players might be just what the Rockies need to make a run at the NL West. With the injuries last year and the dismal record in the second half, the opportunity was given to some of the younger players to see more action which could prove helpful in the 2014 season. The Rockies finally have a solid third baseman as Nolan Arenado came up last year and did a tremendous job defensively becoming the first NL rookie to win a Gold Glove award at third base. With some improvement with his hitting he could be a great middle of the line-up guy. The Rockies still have All Stars Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzales and Michael Cuddyer, all of which if they can stay healthy should make the Rockies a competitive and exciting team to watch. With the retirement of Todd Helton the Rockies signed veteran Justin Morneau which should add some pop with a right hand bat. The pitching should improve with the addition of some bullpen help in Latroy Hawkins and Boone Logan to team up with Brothers and Betancourt. The trade for Brett Anderson from the A’s should help out with the starting rotation. All the additions should give manager Walt Weiss more options to put a competitive and exciting team on the field. Here’s a list of players departed and players added:

Colorado Rockies

Colorado Rockies History

The Colorado Rockies have been playing baseball at high altitudes since 1993, working hard to make the rest of the MLB believe it is possible to play this sport at such great heights and win. Sometimes this arduous work has yielded the desired results.

By season three the Blake Street Bombers had made the playoffs. This would be the lone postseason appearance for 15 seasons, but this should not be taken as a failure. The club has spent of its time in the majors at least flirting with a winning record.  If anything, the Rockies have given the notorious pitcher-friendly NL West some bats with which to contend.  This came as a result of the naturally thinner air and the attractiveness of the ballpark to sluggers and almost sluggers. For the first decade the opposition feared coming to play in Denver.

As the league learned more about playing in this climate it learned a couple things. The first being that Denver and the surrounding area were as hungry for baseball as the most storied markets. Colorado’s attendance figures are perennially ranked among the best in the MLB. The second is that the Rockies pitchers were suffering much more from pitching in the environment than the opposition. The opposition could come in and leave. Any fatigue would be momentary. The Rockies pitchers would have to endure 81 games playing in these conditions and though they did not pitch every day, it quickly wore on even the strongest of arms.

Still, a staff will have a breakthrough season every once in a while. One such season came in 2007 when the Rockies finally returned to the postseason and even made a World Series appearance. Colorado had been counted out of contention with two months left on the schedule, but a surge in the pitching staff led to a shocking run to a one-game playoff with the San Diego Padres to determine the wild card recipient. The pitching shut down the Padres, Phillies, and Diamondbacks, leading to an eight-game winning streak and a chance to play the Red Sox in the Fall Classic. Boston would sweep Colorado, but hope that pitching could be a point of strength for the Rockies would be reignited, as it is to this day.
