Background - Chicago White Sox
The Hitless Wonders are famous for winning the 1906 World Series against their cross-town rival, the Cubs, despite having the worst batting average in the American League. That team faced a Cubs team that had won a record 116 games.
The 1917 White Sox featured Shoeless Joe Jackson, second baseman Eddie Collins, and pitcher Lefty Williams. The club had spent the two previous seasons building the roster that would defeat the New York Giants after winning 98 games in the regular season. The Sox would come back from a 5-2 deficit in the third game to win 8-5 and turn the tide of the 2-2 series in their favor.
The 1917 season was followed by a very successful 1919 season (the 1918 season was shortened because of World War I) that landed them back in the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Though heavily favored, the Sox would lose the best of nine game series in unconvincing fashion. Later payments were found to be made to eight of the players. Those eight, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, were banned from baseball altogether.
The White Sox found little success in the following three decades, but began fielding competitive teams again the 1950s. The '59 team won the pennant but failed to win the World Series. The club would not find consistent success again until the ‘90s with teams featuring Frank Thomas and a strong pitching staff. Those rosters failed to bring back a World Series crown despite close calls, including a trip to the American League Championship Series in 1993.
The 21st century has brought the teams its first World Series since 1917, with a surprise win in 2005. The White Sox rallied around new manager Ozzie Guillen to finish 99-63 and defeated the Red Sox, Angels, and Astros on the franchises way to its first World Series crown in 88 years, a year after the Red Sox broke their 86-year curse.

2008 Season Preview
|
 The Sox hope to have fixed the offensive woes from the 2007 season. The health of Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, and Joe Crede will be a key to the cure, but the addition of Nick Swisher at leadoff and Orlando Cabrera should produce more than the American League low 693 runs last season.
The White Sox will need the offense and an improvement by the pitching staff, sans John Garland, will be necessary to bring the White Sox back into contention in the American League Central. Buerlhe returns as staff ace with help from Javier Vazquez, Jose Contreras, and a host of young prospects who saw action last season.
