The Chicago White Sox the year in third place in the AL Central with a 79-83 record. This has been the second disappointing season in a row after winning the World Series. The team seemed to do its best to squander any goodwill from the fans in the 2009 MLB season at U.S. Cellular Field. The Sox struggled to put the bat on the ball all season long as the starting pitching wasted surprisingly strong efforts from an underrated starting rotation.

John Danks, Gavin Floyd, and Mark Buehrle were the heart of the team, finishing a combined 37-32 with 58 quality starts. Danks and Buerhle had an ERA below 4.00 and Floyd had an ERA of 4.06. The point being that solid pitching performances were in vain. The White Sox struggled to fill out the rest of the rotation, turning to Bartolo Colon, Chris Richards, and Freddy Garcia. The midseason acquisition of Jake Peavy was far more of a move for the 2010 season schedule, since he was injured at the time and only came back to pitch three games.

The bullpen was not great, but they were far from bad. Closer Bobby Jenks earned 29 saves with solid set up help from Matt Thornton, Octavio Dotel, Tony Pena, and D.J. Carrasco.

The surprise was not that the Chicago White Sox finished third, many experts haad them finishing fourth or fifth in preseason issues; rather, the surprise was that the batting order struggled. Paul Konerko rescued his season late, raising his batting average to .272, but Jermaine Dye became a strikeout machine with 108 Ks and a .250 average. Jim Thome left to get his shot at a World Series ring with the Dodgers by the end of the year.

The Thome departure signaled what is sure to be an eventful summer as the Chicago White Sox release or simply do not resign familiar faces in hopes of building a new team to compliment the starting rotation. Some these young players that are staying struggled a bit, but LF Carlos Quentin, SS Alexi Ramirez, 3B Gordon Beckham, and 2B Chris Getz are a pretty solid foundation. Josh Fields will need to prove he belongs in the majors and CF Alex Rios will need to take this new chance at life and prove he belongs as well.

The 2010 MLB Season should be an interesting one for the Chicago White Sox. The team will be much younger at the positions and have a very formidable starting rotation.
