Chicago Cubs Tickets

The Chicago Cubs are not headed to another season of triple-digit losses. The starting rotation is not nearly as thin and fragile, the infield is one of the best defensive units in the National League, and the outfield is keeping a couple of solid vets around to provide at least a little offense. Essentially, Chicago Cubs will still move quite quickly for opening day at Wrigley as there is enough talent and promise on the roster to keep the home opener sell out tradition alive.

For that kind of fervor to continue, all those pieces mentioned above have to come through. Matt Garza, Jeff Samardzija, and Edwin Jackson have to be innings eaters at the top of the rotation. The bullpen cannot be called upon nearly as much as it has been. Shortstop Starlin Castro and first baseman Anthony Rizzo have to hit at All Star levels (for Starlin, his third) with left fielder Alfonso Soriano hitting plenty of homeruns between his strikeouts to support this offense and at least threaten to be a contender at the beginning of the 2013 MLB schedule.

Chicago Cubs History

The Chicago Cubs are one of the oldest professional sports franchises in the world. The club began playing back in 1876 (though some date them back to 1870). That first quarter century was spectacular. The baseball team, as the White Stockings, finished in first place six times in the young National League. The new century would begin with the team changing names, from the Orphans to the Cubs. The Cubs won two of five World Series in 16 seasons, with the last one coming in 1908. This would be the last World Series the Cubs would win.

As the story goes, a local tavern owner brought his goat to the game in an effort to mock the Detroit Tiger, but it rained and the goat smelled so bad the owner and his goat were forced to leave. He cursed the team, stating the Cubs would never win another World Series at Wrigley Field.

In the years since, the curse has gained momentum and power over fans. They attribute the years of bad luck to this single event. No matter how talented the players were, they could not deliver a third World Series. Still, the team has plenty of great players to celebrate. Ernie Banks and Ryan Sandberg would make one of the best defensive and offensive infield combinations in the history of baseball. Billy Williams and Andre Dawson would do much the same in the outfield, and a rotation with Fergie Jenkins, Bruce Sutter, and Greg Maddux would certainly be championship worthy.
