Boston Red Sox 2008
The Boston Red Sox are relying on the bats of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez again after last seasons World Series. The club hopes Mike Lowell, J.D. Drew, and the emergence of Jacoby Ellsbury will not only take the club back to the playoffs, but might also capture the AL East crown this time too.
The pitching will need to respond though, with Curt Schilling on the disabled list Daiuke Matsuzaka is the unquestioned ace of the starting rotation. Josh Beckett will need to have a similar season to last year, when he won 20 games with a 3.27 ERA to help Matsuzaka. Jon Lester is back after battling cancer and Tim Wakefield is the fourth starter. Jonathon Papelbon will need to hold down the closer position as Manny Delcarmen, Hideko Okajima, and Julian Tavarez hold games for him.
The Red Sox have plenty of young upstarts, but the real competition is the New York Yankees. Their roster is always loaded and they are the team's biggest rivals. Game at Fenway Park should be fun again this summer, so find your seats with tickets from Online Seats, the online option with terrific seats and cheap prices.

Boston Red Sox Background
|
The Boston Red Sox history reaches far back to 1901 when the club was known as the Americans. The club's first two decades were filled with pennants and World Series run, immediately making Bo Sox tickets the best seats in town. The team won six pennants and five World Series, including a run of three in four years from 1915-1918.
The Red Sox of old relied on the player manager Jimmy Collins, immortal pitcher Cy Young, Hall of Fame centerfielder Tris Speaker. The club's run of World Series included the emergence of a star pitcher, Babe Ruth.
Ruth's contract was sold to the then-terrible Yankees after he broke the single-season home run record with 29. The sale of Ruth by Red Sox owner Harry Frazee was a move meant to help with the team's tender financial situation and help purchase their home field, Fenway Park.
The move also sent the Red Sox into an 86-year World Series drought that only came with three pennants. The club had plenty of great players in those long decades with greats like Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Wade Boggs, and Roger Clemens, but always seemed to shoot themselves in the foot whenever the chance of winning a World Series arrived. The fans remained loyal throughout though, passing their tickets on from generation to generation.
In 1967, the Red Sox came into the season as supposed door mats, but managed to finish 92-70, a game ahead of the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins for the American League Pennant. On the way to the pennant a star young outfielder by the name of Tony Conigliaro went down with a season-ending injury in the American League Championship Series against the Angels. The Red Sox won the series and went into a difficult series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Without the young fan favorite and locker room glue the club lost the World Series in seven games, 4-3.
The Red Sox won the 1975 American League Pennant with an incredible roster. First baseman Carl Yastrzemski teamed with the All Star outfield of Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, and Dwight Evans, future Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk, and pitchers Luis Tiant and Bill Lee. The talented team would face another loaded team in the World Series in the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds were known as the "Big Red Machine" for their explosive offense. Tickets to the series guaranteed a great show as the offensive powerhouses collided. The Red Sox lost the hard fought series in seven games again, depite the heroics of Carlton Fisk and pitch hitter Bernie Carbo.
The same Red Sox lineup was well on their way to returning to the post season in 1978 with a 14.5 game lead over the Yankees in July. Unfortunately the club slowly surrendered the lead until the Yankees completed a four game sweep of the Bo Sox on September 10 and tied them for first place in the American League East. The battled continued and ended the season with a tie for first place. The clubs met in a one game playoff that found the Yankees behind 4-1 in the seventh inning. A three run home run by Bucky Dent and a solo shot by Reggie Jackson gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead. With a man a third, Yastrzemski popped out to end the game and the Red Sox playoff hopes.
The Red Sox again put together a talented team with Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Don Baylor, a young Wade Boggs, and a AL Cy Young Award winning and MVP Roger Clemens in 1986. The club won the American League East by one game and the American League Championship Series against the Angels in six games.
The World Series matched the Red Sox up with the New York Mets. Boston went into game six with a 3-2 lead and tickets were incredibly difficult to find to the series that would end the curse. The club went into the tenth inning with a 5-3 lead. With one strike between the club and victory, the Red Sox surrendered three straight singles and a wild pitch to let the Mets tie the game. Boston looked about to head into the 11th inning as a slow roller headed toward first baseman Bill Buckner, but the ball went under his glove and the Mets scored the winning run. The Mets took game seven and the cursed Red Sox continued their drought.
The Red Sox won the AL East title several times after the traumatic series, but failed to in a single post season game until 1998. Stuck in the same division as the dominant Yankees, the Red Sox have not been able to capture first place in the East since 1995, but they have won the wild card spot and have made it count.
In 2004, the Red Sox went on one of the most incredible playoff runs ever. They began in the wild card spot in the American League and swept the Angels. Then they faced the hated Yankees in the American League Championship Series and fell behind 3-0. With one game between them and the end of the season, Boston won four straight games to defeat the shocked Yankees. All the fans who had tickets and were able to see the games are sure to pass on the tremedous story to their children and grandchildren. The team went on to sweep the Cardinals in the World Series.
Since then, the Red Sox have been to the playoffs twice. Once, exiting in the first round against the eventual World Series Champion Chicago White Sox in 2005, and the second time again taking the wild card position to the World Series, where they swept the Colorado Rockies in 2007.
