 The Baltimore Orioles began the 2009 MLB season so well. They were 6-2 before burying the season hopes with a long losing streak. The Orioles ended up finishing in last place in the AL East with a 64-98 record. They played such bad baseball down the stretch that they won last place by 11 games, losing 13 of the last 17 games. Baltimore's offense had an issue with extra base hits and stranding runners on base. The best player on the team and in the batting order was Nick Markakis. Markakis led the team in hitting (.293), RBI (101), and 2nd in runs (94). Not bad for a player with Adam Jones and Luke Scott protecting him in the order. Rookie Left Fielder Nolan Reimold looks like he could be a key player if the Orioles are going to try and crawl out of last place in the next few seasons. The entire Orioles pitching staff was just awful, finishing nearly last in every major statistical category in the American League. Brad Bergesen and Koji Uehara look like they are solid middle of the rotation starters, but this club desperately needs an ace and Jeremy Guthrie is not that player. He went 10-17 with a 5.04 ERA. After the Orioles shipped George Sherrill off the Dodgers, fans have to be wandering who us going to fulfill the role of closer. This team basically needs to get rid of everyone over the age of 28 and start over. The 2010 MLB season should be interesting as the Baltimore Orioles try and figure out how to avoid a third straight last season finish for the fans that remain faithful and purchase Baltimore Orioles tickets for Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
