 The Baltimore Orioles fans with season tickets are in a familiar position, at the bottom of the American League East. The club has struggled in a division filled to the brim with competitive teams, being the only team with a record below .500 so far.
The offense, while not explosive like the Tampa Bay Rays, has not been truly awful. The bats have been able to make enough contact to rank in the middle of the league. Anybody who has had Orioles tickets for a game at Camden will tell you that though the hitters are able to get some hits they are unable to drive in any runs.
Currently the team ranks tenth in run production. Center fielder Adam Jones, designated hitter Luke Scott, right fielder Nick Markakis, and first baseman Aubrey Huff have been able to put runs on the board, but few other players have been able to help.
The run production may be frustrating, but the real big problem with the Orioles is a pitching staff that ranks in the bottom tier in every major statistical category. Fans with season tickets do not want to see their Orioles bombarded with scoring deficits.
Only one starter, Brad Bergesen has an ERA below 4.00. Staff ace Jeremy Guthrie has struggled mightily with an ERA well above 5.00 and a penchant for giving up homeruns. Otherwise, injuries and struggles have resulted in five pitchers trying to fill in the rest of the rotation with very little success.
The only pitchers fans should feel comforted by are three relievers. If Jim Johnson and Danys Baez are sent in for middle relief chances are that they will not blow the lead. If George Sherrill comes in to save the game, he will most earn a save (though opportunities are rare). So for those fans with Orioles tickets to Camden Yards, here is hoping that you get to see a game in which Johnson, Baez, or Sherrill play.
