Supposedly, the best part of the Baltimore Orioles coming into the 2013 MLB season is the bullpen, but no one begins talking about the bullpen when they talk about contenders. Instead, the Orioles and their fans want to talk about the offense and brag about how these bats are powerful enough to make this team a true contender. Now, if the offense matches last season’s performance and that vaunted bullpen is as good as advertised, Baltimore Orioles tickets will be available for a second straight playoff appearance.

Let’s be clear, last season the Orioles made the playoffs because the offense managed to hit doubles and homeruns. The team did not post a particularly high batting average and it did not boast a very good OBP. Instead the hitter swung freely and made just enough contact to win 93 games. Experts spent the year waiting for those bats to begin missing again, as the players previous numbers would suggest. They did not and Baltimore played in the postseason for the first time in 15 seasons.

In 2013, the experts are at it again, calling for a major regression for players like Chris Davis. Davis was one of the major drivers of the offense last year, hitting 30-plus homeruns with a posting a slugging percentage around .500. These were career highs and he needs to maintain them to continue this team’s success, especially since Mark Reynolds, another free swinger, is gone.

Similarly, the Baltimore Orioles are willing to bet that Davis, along with Adam Jones, Matt Weiters, and J.J. Hardy are not going to regress and will continue to drive the baseball out of the park like never before. They are willing to bet that Nick Markakis is going to thrive as a contact hitter and that Nate McLouth will do his part to make sure that when these players drive the ball deep at Orioles Park at Camden Yards there will be a runner on base to drive in. The front office is expects these players will again prove the experts wrong and the fans agree.

Baltimore Orioles History

The Baltimore Orioles are one of the oldest franchises in the MLB. At one time they were the Milwaukee Brewers and then the St. Louis Browns. As much as fans in Baltimore have complained about the Orioles in the last half century plus, the time on the East Coast has been a relative success.

From the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s the Orioles won three World Series. Those first few championship teams were led by the likes of hitters Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, and Brooks Robinson and a pitching staff that included Mike Cuellar and Jim Palmer. These players dominated the game in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Together, this crew of MVPs and 20-game winners won the World Series in 1966 and 1970. In fact, in a span of six years the Orioles went 2-2 in the World Series.

The baseball team remained competitive through the 1970s, but the emergence of Cal Ripken, Jr. and Eddie Murray would take the team back to the World Series twice in from 1979 to 1983. The Orioles won their third and final World Series in franchise history to date in 1983. Baltimore has been searching for that spark and that kind of dynamic roster ever since.

Much of these glory years have been forgotten outside of the mid-Atlantic thanks to the dominance of the New York Yankees in the 1990s. However the Orioles have a real chance of returning to glory in the 21^st century, with a developing pitching staff and a division no longer dominated by the New York Yankees.
