The Angels struggled at first, as is common with expansion teams, but the struggles continued into the ‘70s and the team would first reach the post season in 1979. The Angels of the ‘70s were notable for a 1-2 combination of Frank Tanana and Nolan Ryan that left many teams dazed. Ryan would throw four no-hitters and set the mark for strikeouts in a season in 1973 with 383. Ryan's strike outs aside, his win-loss records were average and he was let go in the late 1970s as the Angels built steam and approached the playoffs.
The 1979 Angels won with a powerful offense that included MVP designated hitter Don Baylor, Bert Campaneris, Rod Carew, Dan Ford, and Bobby Grich. The ‘80s would usher in a number teams that could not quite make the World Series. The 1982 Angels nearly came back from an 0-2 series deficit in the ALCS against the Brewers, but fell in the fifth game. The 1986 Angels behind Rookie of the Year Wally Joyner and pitcher Chuck Finley won the AL West again and again would lose in the deciding game of the ALCS to the Boston Red Sox after failing to close out the Red Sox in the ninth inning with two out in game five.
The Angels of the 21st century have had tremendous success winning the 2002 World Series and winning the AL West title in 2004, 2005, and 2007. The 2002 World Series victory had the Angels come from the wild card spot to take the title from the San Francisco Giants in the highest scoring World Series ever.

2008 Season Preview

 The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play in the weak AL West and may advance to the playoffs purely on the basis of the starting rotation. Manager Mike Scioscia will have his choice of starters, with six to pick from. Most teams are lucky to find three or four solid starters, but the Angels have their choice of John Lackey, Kelvin Escobar, Jon Garland, Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana, and Joe Saunders. Fireballer Francisco Rodriguez makes sure any close games go the Angels' way.
Vladimir Guerrero, the perennial Triple Crown contender, will couple with Tori Hunter and designated hitter Garrett Anderson to supply the power for the batting order. First baseman Casey Kotchman, second baseman Howie Kendricks, and third baseman Chone Figgins are great hitters who should provide plenty of base runners for the power players.
Angel Stadium of Anaheim should see a division winner in the American League West this season. The Angels are in the weakest division in the American League and an easier schedule than the Central and East will the Angels an edge all season.
