Maya's musical journey began when she was hired by Elastica band's Justine Frischmann to do the artwork for the band's album ‘The Menace.' While touring along with the band through America, she came in touch with electro-clash artist ‘Peaches,' who encouraged her to begin a career in music and also introduced her to Roland MC-505 sequencing machine. After returning back to London, Maya, with the help of Justine Frischmann, recorded a demo tape comprising of six songs. One of the singles from the demo tape titled ‘Galang,' a unique mixture of varied genres, had a limited release in 2003. The song became extremely popular both with media and DJ's bringing Maya to the notice of a number of major record labels. She signed up with XL Recordings, who re-released her single ‘Galang.' Accompanied by a spectacular video featuring Maya, the re-released song found huge popularity. Riding high on the success of her ‘Galang,' she released her second single ‘Sunshowers,' which also was highly successful. After the successes of ‘Galang' and ‘Sunshowers,' Maya collaborated with Diplo, a successful DJ from Mississippi and released the mixtape ‘Piracy Funds Terrorism.' Initially released only through press and at live shows, ‘Piracy Funds Terrorism' gained unprecedented popularity adding numerous new fans to Maya's already huge fan-base. She followed this with her live performances at Toronto and New York receiving phenomenal response.
Maya's debut album ‘Arular' was released in 2005. It received a spectacular response and wide critical acclaim. She also gained nomination for the prestigious ‘Mercury Music Prize' for ‘Arular.' Stylus Magazine heralded ‘Arular' as the No.1 album of the year.
