Melissa Manchester
Melissa Manchester was born on February 15, in the year 1951 in the Bronx area of New York. She was interested in music right from childhood, because all the members of her family were in to music. Her father was a bassoonist who used to play for the New York Metropolitan Opera. He started learning the piano and harpsichord at the Manhattan School of Music and Arts. He started commercial jingles at the age of 15. Not only this, she also became a staff writer for Chappel Music, while she was still attending New York City's High School of the Performing Arts. She then, went on to study songwriting at New York University with Paul Simon. Later she joined the Manhattan club scene, where she used to write songs. It was during this time that, she was noticed by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow who took her on as a backup singer in 1971.
In 1973, she released her debut album "Home to Myself" in which most of the songs were written by Manchester along with Carole Bayer Sager. Then after a lapse of two years, she released her next album "Melissa", that produced her first top ten hit, Midnight Blue. She then went on to collaborate with Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks to co-write their hit duet, "Whenever I Call You Friend". During this time, she was given the opportunity to do a role on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow, where she had to play the role of a teacher , who teaches the main character the essentials of songwriter. In 1979 she received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance, with her version of Peter Allen's "Don't Cry Out Loud". It also made the top ten. In the year 1980, she also became the first singer, whose two movie themes was nominated for an Academy Award. They were "Through The Eyes Of Love" from the film Ice Castles and "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the film The Promise. Then after a gap of two years she had her biggest hit "You Should Hear How She Talks About You". This won her the Grammy award for the Best Female Vocal Performance. Her one of the biggest as well as recent Adult Contemporary hit was a 1989, updated of Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By". Throughout the 80's and 90's, she did recording, acting and also appearing with Bette Midler in the film For the Boys and also appeared on the television series Blossom. She also wrote and starred in the musical, that is based on the Bernice Ruben's novel I Sent A Letter To My Love, with the same name.
