Melba Moore was born Melba Hill on 29 October, 1945,in New York City to Vocalist Bonnie Davis and Saxophonist and owner of club Mitten's Playhouse at Harlem. Peforming Arts was in her genes. It started with dance lessons at the age of 4. She studied Voice and Piano at the High School of Performing Arts. She further continued her musical studies pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Music from New Jersey State College at Montclair. She began work as a schoolteacher until the time got a break as a back up singer for her icon Aretha Franklin alongside. She continued with Ashford & Simpson and Dionne Warwick. In 1967, the spotlight was finally on Melba when she won the leading role in 'Hair' replacing Diane Keaton. This was also important for African-American actresses in Broadway as it was a first for an African-American actress to win a starring role. Her brilliance in 'Hair' opened many doors for her and paved the way for lead roles in Purlie (for which she won the 1970 Tony award), Les Miserables, and Your Arm's too short to box with God. She also appeared in Timbuktu as Marsinah with Eartha Kitt in 1978.
She married Charles Huggins in 1976 with whom she formed Hush Productions. this was a union that would bring her much sorrow emotionally and financially when her husband without any prior knowledge divorced her in 1991. Left alone, she even applied for welfare and food stamps when all her friends and family deserted her. The daughter she had with Huggins left her to join the Bill Cosby family but when her daughter abandoned her to join Bill Cosby's family, she went on welfare in 1992.
