Artists like Alicia Keys and John Legend have a small debt to pay to an artist like Maxwell. He helped revive the soul sounds of the 1970s when artists like Roberta Flecka, Al Green, Sly Stone, and Marvin Gaye helped establish a type of soul (neo soul) that spoke not only to the internal strife caused by love and hate, but also that appreciated the greater condition of the world. Maxwell may have been influenced by not only the music of those classic performers but also by the tragedy within his own family. He was born on May 23, 1973 in Brooklyn to a Pentecostal father from Puerto Rico and a devout Baptist mother from Haiti. At the age of three he lost his father in a plane crash.

This event changed his view of the world. He began to sing at the Baptist church as a young child and soon began to move away from Gospel and explore his own feelings and verses, writing songs and using an old Casio keyboard to perform them. By the age of 17 Maxwell had developed the desire and drive to perform before crowds of people with tickets to see him in concert.

He was performing in clubs around New York in the early 1990s, performing material inspired by R&B artists from the early 1980s. After three years on the club scene Columbia Records signed the aspiring musician. Maxwell went to work with songwriter Leon Ware and guitarist Wah Wah Watson to produce his first album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. The songs felt like classical soul music and the record label felt unsure about the success of such an album.

Maxwell's Hang Suite sat on the shelf for two years, finally being released in 1986 after the release of the second single from the album, Ascension. The album went double platinum and justified the record company's investment. Maxwell found such a willing audience that he recorded a show for the MTV concert series MTV Unplugged. The concert series had quickly become a phenomenon, so the invitation and show truly spoke to the popularity of the new R&B and soul singer. He sang from his catalog of work and covered Kate Bush's This Woman's Work and Nine Inch Nails Closer.

The singer stayed active, touring heavily as a new artist that did not want to fade away from the public consciousness. Maxwell tickets for several tours kept fans satisfied while he worked on his second studio album, Embrya.
