The band has raised today's acclaimed artists like Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, and Tricky. These potent musicians has got an old history dates back to 1983 when they founded a Wild Bunch as one of the most famous and booming sound system that came to U.K music scene. This ardent band became the most popular in Bristol club crowd because of their variety of musical styles, from punk to reggae & R&B. Their popularity gone so high that made the local live music freezed.

In 1987, two members of Wild Bunch, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall together with Robert del Naja, a graffiti artist 3D, formed the group Massive Attack. This new group released its first single "Any Love" in 1988. In 1991 massive Attack released its first album, "Blue Lines", featuring the hit singles "Unfinished Sympathy" and "Daydreaming." "Day dreaming featured the sensual vocals of Shara Nelson & amazing raps Tricky. "Unfinished Sympathy" became one of the best songs of all time found by some polls. Blue Lines featured Nelson on many of the most exciting and memorable tracks of the album. Blue Lines subsequently proved to be one of the most influential British records of the 1990s, giving rise to a new genre of music referred as "Bristol sound,". This music was called trip-hop more commonly which is highly disliked by the Massive Attack band.

Another release of Massive Attack was "Protection" in 1994 which featured two string instrumentals arranged by Craig Armstrong. This album had more Eros and depth in the music and sound in the tracks. This was the last album with Tricky after which he concentrated on his own solo career. The third album "Mezzanine" was launched in 1998. The music of this album changed the earlier image of the music that massive Attack had. This album has tracks with extremely dark and stressed sound filled with distorted guitars along with the earlier jazz lacking beats of drum machines and percussion. Because of the dark and soulless music, Vowles left the band as he was not satisfied by the change in music. Later he was replaced by the Nail Davidge. Massive Attack's live show were affected highly by "Mezzanine". The band incorporated more of live instrumentation in addition to the previous set up of their shows. They made stimulating changes in the stage by including a live guitarist, bassist, drummer, and keyboard player in addition to the guest vocalists along with riveting lighting effects and a video screen. "100th Window", the fourth album released in 2003, of Massive Attack figured among the top 10 in the UK charts.
