His family moved to Harlem, New York where Mase grew up rapping to entertain his friends in the school basketball team. A natural sportsman, he won a scholarship to SUNY but he spent all his time in his first love-rapping. Adopting the name 'Mase Murder', he joined 'Children of the Corn'. The band did not last long after a member died in a car crash. Mase continued as a solo artist, doing the rounds and meeting people in NY's hip-hop scene. In 1996, hoping to meet Jermaine Dupri, he went to Atlanta instead he met P.Diddy who signed him up in his label after an impromptu rap. Mase debuted in Diddy's 112's 'Only You' remix. Before the release of his own album, he was featured in Diddy's videos including, 'Can't nobody hold me down' and'It's all about the Benjamins'. Mase also appeared with Mariah Carey in her 'Honey' video, rapped the opening verse of Notorious B.I.G's 'Mo' money, Mo' problems' and Busta Rhymes' 'the Body Rock'. Other appearances include Brian McKnight's 'You should be mine' and Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s 'Young Cassanova'.
