The John Zorn Acoustic Masada band are John Zorn on alto sax, Joey Baron on drums, Dave Douglas on trumpet and Greg Cohen on bass. They have been performing since 1993 and tour Europe and NYC at least three times a year. Drummers have been shuffled from time to time. Kenny Wollesen has been featured the most. Zorn and the band have recorded one EP for DIW, nine albums and three live albums since they began. The albums are 'Masada 1: Alef', 'Masada 2', 'Masada 3', 'Masada 4:Dalet', 'Masada 5: Hei', 'Masada 6: Vav', 'Masada 7: Zayin', ' Masada 8:Het', 'Masada 9: Tet' and 'Masada 10 : Yod'. 'Mudbar' from the album 'Masada 4: Dalet' uses odd time signatures, the track is dense and funky. Another gem from this album is 'Zenan', Joey Baron's drumming beautifully closes the album.'Idalah-Abal' (from the album Masada 1;Alef) is Zorn's most ominous and beautiful ballad. However, the audience favorite is 'Beeroth'. 'Zayin' explored new grounds for the Masada on a whole. The album feature new grooves in Tekuhah, Sheveh and Otiot and also new song formats in Zemer and Bacharach. Critics love 'Masada 9: Tet' and recommend it just for the presence of the tune 'Meholalot' (lasts close to 9 minutes). The spiky rhythms of the drums in 'Amarin' (Masada 8: Het) showcases what an intense player the drummer is. 'Masada 10: Yod' features the quiet and tender 'Tzalim' which is sure to sedate you with its beautiful soothing sound. Another stellar track from this album is the stately 'Abrakala'.

Masada is a musical project John Zorn embarked on in the late 90's not just to sell tickets but to create avant-garde fusion. To create a radical Jewish sound that would be accessible to listeners today, Zorn fused traditional Jewish scales with Ornette Coleman's free jazz music of the 60's and the 50's Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan's piano-less quartets. On a personal note, this is John Zorn embracing his roots.
The collection has over 200 tunes with compositions that integrate elements of classical, jazz and avant-garde with Klezmer, Eastern and Middle eastern music. Masada is not entirely Jewish music but rather its aspects and facets. Drawing from many cultures,as seen in his 'Great Jewish music', Zorn expresses Jewish music as not restricted to only Klezner but all the influences and types of music the Jews have lived with. Lou Reed's rock music to Mahler's symphonies and Burt Bucharach's melodies have all been embedded in Masada tunes. 'Masada: 7 Zayin' beautifully merges the subtle interplay of Masada and hard rock sound of Naked City (Zorn's previous band). Zorn wanted to delve into melodies and changes of conventional Jazz song writing. The only similarity Masada has with Jazz is that of having two repetitions of the melody. Zorn's Masada raises the bar as he does not exceed three stave lines.
