In 1963, the Supremes tasted success after two years with 'When the lovelight Starts shining through his eyes' reaching the Top 40 list. Mary Wilson performed most of the band's ballads with her rich alto voice. Diana Ross was now the lead singer of the band. Berry Gordy enlisted the help of ace writing and producing team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. After three successful years, Gordy decided to rename the band as 'Diana Ross and the Supremes', further replacing Florence Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. The band and Holland-Dozier-Holland had a streak of twelve #1 hits like, 'Come see about me', Where did your love go', 'Stop, in the name of love', 'Can't hurry love' and 'Baby love'.
In 1970, Diana Ross left the band to pursue a solo career. Mary Wilson, the only original member of the Supremes, grouped with Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong to form The New Supremes. Without Diana and Barbara, the group had bug hits, including 'Stoned Love', 'Up the Ladder to the Roof' and 'River Deep, Mountain High' (performed with the Four Tops), 'Nathan Jones' and 'Floy Joy'. The New Supremes saw Wilson singing lead vocals with Jean in several of their tunes like 'Floy Joy', 'Automatically Sunshine' and 'Touch'.
In 1977, Mary Wilson branched out on her own to pursue a solo career. In 1979, Motown released Mary's first album as a solo artist called 'Mary Wilson' which included the dance hit, 'Red Hot'. Done with her Motown contract, Mary sought contracts at Atlantic and Boardwalk labels.
1986 saw the release of her autobiography, 'Dreamgirl:My life as a supreme' which was soon followed by its sequel 1990's 'Supreme faith:Someday we'll be together'. Across the Atlantic, Mary Wilson recorded 'Don't get mad, Get Even' with Motorcity.
Wilson has also released singles, namely 'U'1995 and 'Turn Around'in 1996 which received huge success in Europe. Wilson tours nine to ten months every year performing Supremes' hits. In May 2001, she graduated from NYU with an Associate degree in Liberal Arts. She has done some work in theater, including a performance at Boston's Shubert Theatre in the musical 'Leader of the Pack', 'Grandma Sylvia's Funeral' a comic play. There was a fleeting appearance of Wilson's in the 1999 comedy film 'Jackie's back'. Mary Wilson proposed a bill to ban impostor groups from performing under names of groups from the 60's and 70's, which was passed in many states.

Jenkins wanted to create a female counterpart of his all-male 'Doo-Wop' group 'The Primes'(later known as 'The Temptations'). The Primettes performed at talent competitions, local clubs and 'sock hops'. With Detroit based 'LuPine Label' the girls released their first single 'Tears of Sorrow b/w Pretty baby' (1960). The single did nothing for their career and off they went to the office of 'Motown Records'. Betty McGlown was replaced by Barbara Martin. Upon Label insistence, they re-emerged as 'the Supremes'.
A multi-faceted woman, this writer/singer/actress is also a generous and active humanitarian who tours through out the nation inspiring people with her 'Dare to Dream' project. Her charity work includes the Easter Seals Foundation, UNICEF, The NAACP, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the All-Star Network, Figure Skaters of Harlem, a youth organization devoted to helping children towards entering the Olympics, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Cancer Society and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
