Manic Street Preachers
In 1990, the signed with punk label Damaged Goods Records for one Extended Play. The four-tracked EP "New Art Riot" turned out to be polemic for its attacks on fellow musicians. Their style of operating earned a reputation of a wild kind, much like that of Guns' N Roses. At the same time, they kept acquiring a rabid fan. They paired with Columbia imprints to bring out their debut album "Generation Terrorists" in 1992. The album was released with lofty ambitions and aggressive expectations. They toured world over after the release and could sense success. Although, in the US it was only lukewarm when compared to other places. The record sold 25,000 copies, but still, that it did not match up to their grand expectations. The second album – "Gold Against The Soul" was released in 1993. It did not do well commercially and there was also a shift in the style of lyrics from political diatribes to melancholy strains. It was also reflecting Richey's fragile state of mind, as he was the problem child of the band at that time. He indulged in excessive drinking and was admitted a number of times for correction. The band continued to perform and in 1994, and "The Holy Bible", considered their magnum opus was released. Richey rejoined the group after therapy and those tours were their last appearance as a four-piece band.
Disaster struck the band in February 1, 1995 when Richey disappeared after checking out of the Embassy Hotel in London. Interestingly, his files are still open and he is marked as missing. The manics were recording their comeback album "Everything Must Go" in 1996. It was released to critical acclaim and also went double platinum. Then came "This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours" which was criticized heavily leading to a punk song "The Masses Against The Classes" in 1999. The manics became the first western rock band to play in Cuba and also had a chance to meet Fidel Castro. After the album "Know Your Enemy", "Forever Delayed" was released in 2002. They released Life Blood in 2004 and their music journey seems to know of no end.

Artist Biography - Manic Street Preachers
|
Manic Street Preachers are controversial, confrontational, and yet the conquerors of the Britpop scene. They were a group of folks that set out from the small South Wales town of Blackwood to dominate European music. It started in 1986, by a bunch of school buddies James Dean Bradfield, Flicker, Sean Moore, and Nicky Wire in Oakdale Comprehensive School, Blackwood, Wales. Besides being music superstars, they were also known to be championing the political cause of ‘worker class welfare'. This ideology must have stemmed from their upbringing, which was in a predominantly blue collar societal set up in Blackwood. Their political orientation was evident in the lyrics of their songs and their public utterances.
The band started out as a foursome and reduced to three soon after as Flicker left. Bringing in Richey Edwards, who is known to have been the backbone of the band, filled up his place. Those were the days of The Clash and the Manics took inspiration from it. It was also an eventful time in politics with Thatcher adopting a hard-line approach with the miners. Their first single "Suicide Alley" reflected their political anger based on that situation. The Manics moved to London and continued to be honest and candid in portraying the realities of life. It was (mis)construed as arrogance, superficial glamour and aggressive intellectualism. However, their fans liked them for all the reasons the media loathed them, which helped them stay stead in the mainstream music industry.
