Luka Bloom
In 1979, he moved to Groningen, Holland for three years. In 1980, he released 'In Groningen' which includes his version of the popular, fan-favorite Felix Pappalardi's 'One Last Cold Kiss'. His song 'Remember the brave ones' from the 1982 album 'No Heroes', would later be covered by 'Moving Hearts'. Between 1983 to 1986, Barry adopted the rockstar route and formed a pop/punk band called 'Red Square'. In 1984, Barry's son Robbie was born for whom he wrote 'Gabriel'. He also covered Mike Scott's 'Sunny Sailor boy'.
1987 saw Barry move to America. With the change in location, the change in name followed. Barry adopted 'Luka Bloom' as his public moniker; 'Luka' from a Suzanna Vega song and 'Bloom' from a part of James Joyce's Ulysses. His American journey began with performances in Washington D.C. and New York City. He performed frequently at 'Red Lion' in New York's Greenwich village, which saw Eileen Rivers playing fiddle as backup in his 'Irishman in Chinatown' tour. She was also featured in his 'Riverside' album. His performances at Red Lion proved lucky when a talent scout from 'Reprise' offered him a deal. With them, he released Riverside (1990); Acoustic Motorbike (1992) and Turf (1994). Luka received humongous praise from critics and fans alike for his folksy, ballad-esque rendition of LL Cool J's 'I need love'. In the same album, there is also a terrific version of Elvis Presley's 'Cant' help falling in love'.
After returning to Ireland, Luka released his album 'Salty Heaven' (1999). This album was part recorded at his home in Birr, and completed in London's Abbey Road Studios. Following 'Salty Heaven', he recorded an album including covers like 'Keeper of the Flame'(2000). His albums include the compilation 'The Barry Moore Years'(2001); 'Between the Mountain and the Moon' (2002); the live album 'Amsterdam' (2003); 'Before sleep comes' (2004); 'Innocence' (2005); Tribe(2007) and 'The Platinum Collection' (2007). With a strong voice, Bloom sings in a masculine baritone that clashes somehow perfectly with the sensitivity of his lyrics. The music is tunefulness and lyrics insightful.
