In Port Author, while working with one of his musical heroes Clifton Chenier, he earned the name of "Guitar Junior". In the year 1957, he inaugurated his recording career with the pop "Family Rules" for Eddie Shuler's ‘Lake Charles'. The years following 1959 saw him perform with Jimmy Reed in Chicago and playing cover songs for numerous Chicago Clubs. In the late 70s he delivered four outstanding sides on Alligator Records' ‘Living Chicago Blues' anthology, this dynamic and path breaking composition eventually led to his Alligator debut ‘Bayou Lightning'. This album apart from fetching him a Grand Prix Award, grossed him a valuable lead ahead of his competitors and rooted him firmly on the blues circuit .He was nominated for a Grammy for his distinct work in ‘Bayou Lightning Strikes' and ever since he had been persistently releasing albums till the late 90s, his last been ‘Lone Star Shootout'. Brooks have appeared for television shows like ‘Hee-Haw' and ‘Late Night with David Letterman' apart from performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival and San Francisco Blues Fest. He is often found accompanying his two sons, Ronnie and Wayne, in tour appearances.

Born on December 18, 1933 in Dubuisson, Louisiana to Baker, Sr., a cotton field laborer, and, Lillian Baker, a housewife. Brook's interest in music was fostered by none other than his Grandfather, "Joe the Banjo", who worked in a local circus apart from being a musician and a craftsman. He went to live with his father after completing his eight grade. It was in the year 1950 that he got married and finally relocated in Port Author, Texas.
