The seeds were sown in the late 1980's. Kalamazoo music scene was flourishing at the time. Paul Toth, booking agent and manager of Club Soda began organizing Reggae Nights at the Club. Reggae Nights were held on Thursdays and immediately gained popularity with the people. Fans started flocking to the event from far and wide to watch the performances of superstars of International repute. The renowned artists included the likes of Kanda Bongo Man, Mikey Dread, Inner Circle and many more. Apart from Reggae Nights, some other concerts were also held at Kalamazoo in the 1980's - Music on the Mall, Taste of Kalamazoo etc. The continual and whopping success of the concerts prompted the two creative minds of Kalamazoo city - Club Soda proprietor, Wayne and Club manager, Paul Toth - to begin Long Island Reggae Festival. The festival was organized for the first time in 1996. The event proved to be an instant success and drew visitors in large numbers. Since then the event is held every year. The attendance at the festival has been increasing regularly and today the event is listed in a number of festival directories.
