Show Biography - The Little Mermaid
|
The Little Mermaid musical is based on the Disney movie, The Little Mermaid, and the story book written by Hans Christian Andersen. The show opened January 2008 at the Lunt – Fontanne Theartre on Broadway. The show also did a pre- opening in Denver Colorado at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, and the show was sold out for the entire 6 weeks of performances.
The show centers on Ariel, who is a mermaid, and all she can think about is becoming human. Ariel even has a collection of human things that she is in awe of and is always looking at. In the beginning of the performance Ariel misses an important concert that she is supposed to be a part of, because she is sitting on a rock at the surface of the ocean looking at her collection. Not only has she missed the concert, but she has gotten in trouble because it is strictly forbidden for merfolk (the mermaid type beings) to have any contact with humans. Ariel is very upset by all of this, and her father assigns Sebastian, a crab, to watch over her and make sure she doesn't get in any further trouble. Ariel goes on to sing the famous song "Part of Your World" where she sings about humans and their world. Ariel goes to the surface again to observe a ship and its people. When a storm hits and the Prince is thrown into the ocean, Ariel instinctively goes to rescue him. Ariel admits that she is falling in love with the Prince and will do anything to be with him. On the flip side, the Prince wants to find the person who saved him but all he remembers is a beautiful voice of a girl singing to him. He decides to hold a singing contest to see if he can find the voice and girl behind it. Unfortunately for Ariel, her father the King, finds out that she has come in contact with a human and she is reprimanded. She is so upset that she runs away and into the arms of her evil aunt Ursula, who wants revenge on the King for banishing her from the kingdom. Ursula makes a deal with Ariel and tells Ariel that she can be human for 3 days, but that during this time she must get a kiss from the Prince. If she gets the kiss Ursula promises her that she can become human permanently, however if she fails she will have to spend eternity with Ursula. Ariel agrees and as payment for their deal Ariel gives up her beautiful singing voice.
