The musical follows the movie fairly closely. The show starts out with Rafiki calling the animals to Pride Rock to see meet King Mufasa's new young cub, Simba, The famous song "Circle of Life" is sung at this time. Next we see Scar, the Kings' brother, very upset because now that Mufasa has an heir he feels he has lost his chance to be King and he is very bitter. The story continues and the audience sees Simba growing up and being a playful cub. Next comes the father son relationship between Mufasa and Simba and Mufasa warning his son to not leave the confines of the Pride Lands. News comes that there are hyenas in the Pride Lands and Mufasa must attend to business and Simba is left on his own. Simba wanders over to spend time with his Uncle Scar who plants some information in Simbas mind about the elephant graveyard, a place where Simba is not allowed to go, however now that he has heard about it is very anxious to check out. While the Lioness are hunting to the song "The Lioness Hunt", Simba and his friend Nala sneak away to the elephant graveyard. The audience is then treated to the famous song "I Just Can't Wait to be King". Along their journey the cubs are met by the 3 hyenas who try to scare the cubs. Thankfully Mufasa arrives and saves Simba and Nala. As any parent would feel, Mufasa is upset that Simaba did not listen to him. Father and son have a heart to heart discussion through the song "They Live in You" where Mufasa explains that he will always be there for him. The next scene is back with the hyenas and Scar with Scar trying to convince the hyenas to help him and he in return with help them once he is King.. This next scene is the dramatic stampede scene where Mufasa is killed and Simba runs away leaving the throne available for Scar just as he had planned.
Act 2 shows the down fall of the Pride Lands under the tyrannical leadership of Scar. There is no food or water for the animals. Back on the jungle Simba is growing up surrounded by his new friend Timon and Pumbaa. They sing the famous "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Endless Night" before Simba runs into his old friend Nala who tells him of the terrible happening back home. Simba decides to return home and claim the throne that is rightfully his and save the Pride Lands. After a confrontation with Scar concluding with Scars death, Simba becomes King, and just like his father did with him, Simba hold his baby cub up high for all to see. The finally concludes with a reprise of Circle of Life. The Lion King is good for the whole family with a running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes with a 15 minute intermission.
