1 Sept , 1939 born Lily Tomlin's birth name was Mary Jean Tomlin. She was born in Detroit, Michigan. . Tomlin is a well known and distinguished actress and comedian from America. She is daughter of a factory worker and a house wife who shifted to Detroit from Paducah, Kentucky at the time of Great Depression. Her interest in theater and arts created at Wayne State University. She started practicing her interest after college, by performing stand-up comedy in Detroit followed by her move to New York city. She appeared on Television for the first time on "The Merv Griffin Show" in 1965.
Tomlin joined the sketch comedy show "Laugh-In" in 1969. she absorbed all the characters she played in show, in her real life throughout her career. These funny famous characters include the gum-chewing, wisecracking, snorting telephone operator Ernestine. Her famous dialogues include "One ringy dingy, two ringy dingy" and "A gracious good morning to you ... Have I reached the party to whom I am speaking?". One more character associated with her is the bratty five-year-old Edith Ann, who used to rock in her oversized rocking chair while making rude noises. For this, she was famous for her line "And that's the truth!".

She was offered $500,000 by AT & T to record a commercial using her character Ernestine. But the offer was declined by Tomlin she didn't want to sell her talent and artistic integrity. Contradictory to this incidence, she starred as Ernestine in a spoof of a commercial during Saturday Night Live skit in 1876. In this advert she announced, "We don't care, we don't have to. We're the phone company." Additionally, she acted in two commercials as Ernestine for WebEx recently in 2003.
She is a talented actress and quite famous for her versatility and smartness. For her performance in Nashville, she was for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In this movie she played role of Linnea Reese who is a strait-laced mother of two deaf children. She is having an affair with a country singer. The role of her lover has been played by Keith Carradine. She is remembered for her great performance in the 1981 comedy film "The Incredible Shrinking Woman". She played secretary Violet Newstead in "Nine to Five" and a sallow heiress in the Steve Martin comedy "All of Me".
From 1994 -98, she contributed her voice for Ms. Frizzle character on the animated television series "The Magic School Bus". Facing some financial disturbances in 1990's, she performed in the famous sitcom "Murphy Brown". She played the continuous role of Will Truman's boss Margot on popular serial "Will & Grace". For the last 4 years, she was playing Presidential secretary Deborah Fiderer on "The West Wing". The series finished in May 2006.
