It is a kind of epistolary novel, where in the various characters write letters to one another and the story is told through this way. The letters that Valmont and the Marquise writes actually brings out the plot, while on the other hand the other characters serves as illustrations so as to give a depth to the story.
Though the novel has been written in French language, but has been translated, many times into English. The most recent translation has been by Douglas Parmée. The translation have been reviewed favorably.
The story opens with Vicomte de Valmont who is hard-bent to seduce a married and a virtuous woman Madame de Tourvel. Tourvel lives with the aunt of Valmont, since her husband Monsieur de Tourvel is away because of an ensuing court case.

While in the other end, we find the Marquise de Merteuil is trying his level best to mar Cécile de Volanges, a young girl who has been brought out of the convent, by her mother, so as to get her married to Merteuil, a former lover. But there is a twist in the tale, Cécile falls in love with the Chevalier Danceny. Taking advantage of the situation, Valmont and Merteuil hatch a plan together in a way use the secret lovers, in their devious schemes.
In the plan, Merteuil tells Valmont that he should seduce Cécile, in that way they will be able to take revenge from the future husband of Cécile. But Valmont declines to Mertuil ideas, since he want to spend his time scheming that would lead him to seduce Mme de Tourvel. Valmont has been promised by Merteuil that if he is able to seduce Mme de Tourvel and also is able to give her with proof which is in written, then she will spend the night with him. He thinks that he will be successful in his plans. But luck was not at his side and finds that it was not that easy like his other conquests. While he was continuing in his pursuit, he comes to know through one of his aide that Cécile's mother has told everything, regarding his bad reputation, in a letter to Mme de Tourvel. This fact makes Valmont angry and as suggested by Merteuil he takes revenge by seducing Cécile. On the other hand we find that Merteuil has fallen for Danceny.
Finally, Valmont succeeds in his endeavor in seducing Mme de Tourvel, but there is a twist here, Valmont has fallen in love with Mme de Tourvel. When Merteuil comes to know, he finds a way which creates a barrier between Mme de Tourvel and Valmont and forces Mme de Tourvel to keep her promise about spending a night with him. As a result, Merteuil and Valmont become enemies. Valmont tells Danceny to come in terms with Cécile, and should leave Merteuil. While on the other hand, Merteuil tells Danceny that Valmont has seduced Cécile. The story ends with Valmont dieing in a duel with Danceny, as a result of which Mme de Tourvel also dies hearing hie death, while Cecile returns to the convent.
