Now here is someone who makes songs with a difference, yes that is Leftover Salmon for you. They are known to make music by genre-bending band. Leftover Salmon hails from Boulder, Colorado. They make music by blending the different genres- bluegrass, rock, country, and Cajun/Zydeco. This unique blending has been named by the band as "Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass". This type of has found its favor in the scenario of the jam band.

It so happened, in the year 1989, that a local band with the name the Salmon Heads, requested some of the members of the Left Hand String Band to join them so as to fill in some of the missing gaps in their lineup. The members found that together they make fine music and so came up Leftover Salmon.

In the year 1993, the band released their first album "Bridges to Bert " independently in the year 1993. The album was a minor hit. In the year 1995, a live follow-up "Ask The Fish", made Leftover Salmon to be a band to reckon. They were then asked to perform at the H.O.R.D.E. festival tour. In addition they also signed a contract with Hollywood Records. Their second studio alum and the first one with Hollywood Records, "Euphoria", was released. The album proved that the band are here to stay. Many of the songs of the album became classics and they had devoted fans following them.

They received a major set back, when in the year 2002 founding member and banjoist Mark Vann was diagnosed with cancer and he died in the same year. Later, Noam Pikelny replaced him.

In addition, a documentary film on the band Leftover Salmon, which has been titled "Years In Your Ears," on DVD was released recently. Neil Young, while he was touring with Crazy Horse, Taj Mahal, Leftover Salmon, and several other H.O.R.D.E. bands commented that among all, Leftover Salmon was his favorite band on the tour.

Recently, Jim Herrington of Hollywood Records commented "With the demise of Grateful Dead, Leftover Salmon has assumed the top spot among jam bands, drawing thousands to its shows..." The songs and music of Leftover Salmon can be well compared with Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic, and the former Phish.

Their popularity has grown so much that on an average, Leftover Salmon plays altogether 200 concerts a year, and all their shows are always sold out. The band has also built a mailing list of their fans, which is around tens of thousands.

They are so popular that even famous musician wants to play with them. When they released "Nashville Sessions" for Disney's Hollywood Records, the album was a major hit. It paired up the band with the icons of A-list of Nashville such as Waylon Jennings, Lucinda Williams, Earl Scruggs; along with the A-list of Nashville's most famous session players: Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, John Cowan, Taj Mahal, and Sally Van Meter. They are also drawn parallel to Blues Traveler's John Popper, and John Bell from Widespread Panic.

For the past eleven years, Leftover Salmon has been touring continuously, performing and playing at a number of clubs, theaters, festivals. In addition, one of the member of the band Mark Vann has won the Telluride Bluegrass Fesival's banjo competition a number of times. Their sound is ever expanding and are known to blend bluegrass with country, rock, blues, funk, jazz, and now rap.
