Lea Salonga was born in Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga, on February 22, 1971 in Manila. She started doing shows when she was only small kid. She made her professional debut, at the age of seven, in the Philippines when she performed in the musical The King and I by Repertory Philippines. She was quite appreciated for her performance. She became the lead star of 'Annie' and a lot of other productions started pouring in, such as: Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Fiddler on the Roof, The Rose Tattoo, The Sound Of Music, The Goodbye Girl, Paper Moon and The Fantasticks.

When she was only ten years old, she did a recording in the album "Small Voice". It was a hit and also received a Gold certification. In the song "Happiness", she sang a duet with her younger brother Gerard. From then both brother and sister has worked in a number of production and creative.

Her biggest big break came in the year 1989 when she was selected to play the leading role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon. She also recieved the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical in the year 1989/1990. Not only this she also received the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the same role.

Salonga also performed the song "A Whole New World" (of Disney's Aladdin) at the 65th Annual Academy Awards. The song also won an Oscar. This boosted her and she released a self-titled international debut album with Atlantic Records. The album was an instant hit and it sold hugely in the USA and also went platinum in the Philippines and sold for over 3 million copies worldwide.
After the success of the album, offer started pouring in from Philippines and Singapore. She has done a role as Sandy in Grease, Sonia Walsk in They're Playing Our Song, The Witch in Into The Woods, and Lizzie in Baby. In 1997, a recording from her childhood days, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" was released which went gold in the Philippines. It was followed by "Lea... In Love" in the year 1998, which reached multiple platinum status in the Philippines. Then came "By Heart" that too reached multiple platinum status.

In the year 2005, Salonga played her first US concert tour in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlantic City, and Chicago. Which was followed by concerts in Washington, D.C., and Norfolk, Virginia in the same year. In the year 2005, she went on to perform with a 26-piece ensemble to a crowd of 2,804 at the "Isaac Stern Hall," the Main Hall in New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall for the benefit of Diverse City Theater Company. The concert was a sold out. She became the third Filipino solo artist to perform at the venue after Regine Velasquez and Jose Mari Chan.

She has also performed in Disney, that includes the singing voice of Princess Jasmine for Aladdin in the year 1992, and Fa Mulan for Mulan in the year 1998), as well as the voice of Mrs. Kusakabe (Satsuki and Mei's mother) in Disney's 2005 English dub of Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro.

Salonga has even performed thrice for U.S. Presidents and once for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
