Anyone who has seen the other Vegas Cirque du Soleil shows 'Mystere' and 'O' can probably attest to the fact that Cirque knows 'sexy.' Portions of both shows are downright erotic in a way that doesn't pander or talk down to the audience so it seemed like a natural extension of that ethos to develop an entire show immersed in sexuality and a celebration of same. That was the theory behind 'Zumanity,' the Cirque du Soleil production playing at New York-New York since August of 2003.
Cirque du Soleil explores the nature of sensuality in this erotic, exhibitionist celebration. Gone are the athletes you've come to expect from Cirque; in its place, resident seductress Joey and her cast of 50 dancers and musicians. Described by its director as 'an intense visit to a world where human inhibitions are both unveiled and discarded,' Zumanity invites its guests to discard those inhibitions themselves -- couples can get intimate in the duo sofas and love seats and emulate the acts in front of them. Zumanity bears all the characteristics of a classic Cirque du Soleil production: movement, music, color, acrobatics, and dance but is Cirque's first production to deal with human sexuality. Nudity, both implied and authentic, is an organic element of the production. The 50 people who inhabit this 'human zoo' come in all shapes and sizes, all ages and conditions, all colors and varieties, and Zumanity rejoices in the infinite variety of ways in which they express their own sexuality and their desire for each other.
