Rodeo Finals

Grab your cowboy boots and get ready to kick up your heels as the National Finals Rodeo turns Las Vegas into cowboy country Dec. 3 - 12, 2004.

The top competitors in professional rodeo's seven events will compete at the Thomas & Mack Center, and the top country singers take the stage, bringing the cowboy spirit to Sin City.

Whether you prefer bull riding to barrel racing, or Keith Urban to Dolly Parton, check out the parties, pubs/restaurants and entertainment for the weekend.

Once again, tickets to the events of the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) are about sold out and the town will soon be gearing up for the last big gathering before New Year's Eve.

The NFR has been drawing 'sell out' crowds since the late '70s, when I used to see it at the dome of the old Las Vegas Convention Center. For the past twenty years the Rodeo has been filling the seats of the Thomas and Mack arena.

For fourteen days of fun events, from December 3-12, we'll see, and some of us will become, cowboys and cowgirls. Stetsons and boots will be seen everywhere. Showroom and lounge headliners will be country and western stars.

The NFR is the World Series of rodeo. Events such as saddle bronc and bareback riding, calf and team roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling and bull riding are featured, and if you can't get into the Thomas and Mack for an event, don't pout. You can see it live on TV or watch re-runs in just about every sports book in town.

More than fifty thousand folks are expected to visit town for the Rodeo, as usual, but locals have always been attracted to the event, and they have made it a family affair when they go to watch the events. They have also helped in keeping the tickets sold out.

You don't have to be a cowboy to know when the National Finals Rodeo is in town. For two weeks in December, Las Vegas rediscovers its Western heritage as Stetson hats and snakeskin boots overtake Polo shirts and Reeboks along the Strip. The city's showrooms feature the top stars of country music, and students at UNLV stroll a little more quickly between classes as the magical aroma of cattle wafts through the campus from the adjacent Thomas & Mack Center.

Since 1985, the NFR has been one of the highlights of the local sports and entertainment calendar, with tickets selling out up to a year in advance. For the fortunate few lucky enough to attend the event live, the NFR is a chance to see the best cowboys from across the U.S. and Canada compete for more than $4.5 million in prizes. Sometimes referred to as the "Super Bowl of Rodeos," the competition is open only to the top 15 regular-season finishers in each of professional rodeo's seven events: saddle bronc riding, bull riding, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. The prestige title up for grabs is "best all-around cowboy in the country" and it's pursued among world champions the way football running backs covet the rushing title.

The NFR is so huge that it's got a virtual solar system of events surrounding it at nearby locales. Load up on authentic rodeo loot from more than 400 vendors at the NFR Cowboy Christmas Show, rustle up some business contacts at the PRCA National Convention, or ogle the brawny contestants and their spouses as they model the latest in Western couture for a great cause at the ProRodeo League of Women Fashion Show.
