Ka Cirque Du Soleil: Background

Ka Cirque Du Soleil

KA will perform Fridays through Tuesdays and will be dark (no shows) on Wednesdays and Thursdays. One show will be performed nightly at 8pm from November 26 - December 7. Two shows will be performed nightly at 7pm & 10:30pm from December 10 - February 2.

This is the fourth Cirque du Soleil show to open in Las Vegas. Following the lucrative 'Mystere,' Cirque du Soleil launched 'O,' a water-based show, and the Cirque "KA" 'Zumanity.'

Cirque du Soleil (French for circus of the sun) is known for acrobatic performances that mix athleticism with music and artistry. More than 7 million people saw its shows around the world last year.

The show, entitled 'KA' will feature the acrobatics and performance expected but will add the twist of martial arts, puppetry, multimedia, and pyrotechnics to the mix. This will also be the first Cirque production to heavily feature a storyline, listed in the press material as 'the epic story of a set of twins on a perilous journey to fulfill their shared destiny.' The production is broken into four visually thematic parts, each associated with the four natural elements of water, air, earth, and fire.

KA, the unprecedented new theatrical show from Cirque du Soleil at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, brings together astonishing acrobatic performances, the thrills and action of martial arts from all over the world, plus astonishing innovations in puppetry, multimedia and pyrotechnics. Together, they tell the epic story of a set of twins on a perilous journey to fulfill their shared destiny.

'KA' brings the visual language of cinema to a dazzling live event that is more about storytelling than any previous Cirque production. The show's underlying theme of duality is underscored by the opposing powers of fire to create and to destroy.

'Ka' (pronounced caw) is the name of the new Cirque du Soleil show at MGM Grand, due for a soft opening Nov. 26 and an official debut in February. 'Ka' is an Egyptian concept of duality, and the show's plotline 'KA' it's unusual for a Cirque production even to have one follows a male and female twin separated at birth and their individual adventures along the road of life.

The show will combine acrobatics, martial arts, puppetry, video, pyrotechnics, and other unannounced special effects. 'Ka' carries a total price tag of $165 million: $30 million for the production, the other $135 million invested in building the theater that will house the show.

The title derives from the Egyptian concept of each human's spiritual 'double.' Guy Caron, Cirque du Soleil's director of creation, said the word is the root of many disciplines incorporated into the show, such as kabuki, karate and the Brazilian martial art capoeira.

Ka Cirque Du Soleil Show Biography - Ka Cirque Du Soleil

'Ka' tells the story of Asian twins, male and female, who are separated at birth and threatened by various dangers along their separate journeys. In keeping with Cirque du Soleil tradition, however, the story is told without dialogue.

With four Las Vegas shows and a fifth being discussed for The Mirage, 'we have to reinvent the way to do a Cirque du Soleil show,' Caron noted. 'We don't call it an `act.' We call it a `performance.' We integrate all the elements.'

The stage and refurbished showroom are created by Robert Fisher, production designer for rock tours by U2 and the Rolling Stones, as well as the new Queen musical 'We Will Rock You.' The puppetry, designed to be operated by contortionists, is by Michael Curry, who worked on the stage version of 'The Lion King.'

The creators did not unveil all of their technical surprises, but indicated the action extends into the network of catwalks linking cylindrical towers that wrap around the seating area. Fire also is described as a key motif in the complex production.

The show was originally announced for summer, but delayed by its technical challenges. 'They're not really problems, they're obstacles,' said director Robert Lepage. 'In the Buddhist philosophy, obstacles are your friends. We've made a lot of friends in this production.'

KA tells the epic saga of separated twins -- a boy and a girl -- who embark on a perilous journey to fulfill their linked destinies. As the plot unfolds, danger lies in wait for them at every turn. Archers and spearmen hunt the twins relentlessly, as their quest takes them through a succession of challenging landscapes, from a mysterious seashore through menacing mountains and foreboding forests.

The show's creative elements are essential to invoking the world of KA. The costumes for the international cast of 72 artists have an Asian influence, as reflected in the lavish imperial court costumes and robust martial artists' warrior uniforms. Additionally, the mood is set by the original score, which incorporates soaring melodies and richly textured arrangements driven through an elaborate audio system that literally surrounds the spectator in sound.

Another important element is the ambivalent power of fire to create and destroy. 'Fire is the one thing that holds everything together,' says Lepage. 'It's the storyline and the saga. It creates conflict and destruction as it gives life and light.'
