The troupe started touring Quebec as Les Echassiers in 1980. The first few years the group struggled financially, but a government grant in 1983 to help produce a show for the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada became Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil. The tour settled down and created a circus show without a ring or animals. Cirque tickets expanded beyond Quebec, finding success and failure along the way, and eventually developed a continuous show with breaks that has become a staple of the Cirque du Soleil shows that now are performed around the world.
