Ladysmith Black Mambazo are known for singing a cappella isicathamiya and mbube music and hails from South Africa. It was formed by Joseph Shabalala in the year 1964. Isicathamiya is the traditional music of the indigenous Zulu people, of Africa. The group became so popular in the music that they released their first album "Amabutho", in 1973. The album was a grand success and it received gold disc certification. They then collaborated with Paul Simon in 1986, which led them to release their isicathamiya songs popular in the international level.
In the year 1967, the group started making recordings for Radio Zulu, and then they signed up with West Nkosi in the year 1972. Nkosi was the band member of the Makgona Tsohle and was also the music producer at Gallo Record Company. The following year they released their first album, "Amabutho". The album created waves in the musical field not only it was a hit, but it was the first album by a black musician in South Africa, which received gold status. They released some other albums, which also received gold or platinum certification.

In 1975, they released their first religious album, "Ukukhanya Kwelanga", which earned them a double platinum disc award. This album also became one of their most popular religious albums. By the end of the 80's, the group became popular throughout South Africa, and was even given the permission to travel to Cologne, Germany.
In the 1985, when Paul Simon went to South Africa to find black musicians to collaborate for his album "Graceland". He found Ladysmith Black Mambazo to his liking and asked them to work with him, and together they travelled to London to record the album. The first recording was "Homeless", which was composed by Shabalala with English lyrics by Simon. "Graceland" was released in the same year. The album was a huge success and it introduced Ladysmith Black Mambazo into the international musical field.
After that the group released three records, which was produced by Simon for the American market. The records were "Shaka Zulu" (1987), "Journey of Dreams" (1988) and "Two Worlds, One Heart" (1990). For "One Heart" the group recorded with The Winans, Julia Fordham and George Clinton, among others.
When the Apartheid system was abolished in 1991, the group released the album "Liph' Iqiniso" in the year 1993. The album's last track, "Isikifil' Inkululeko" which means freedom has arrived, is a celebration of the end of Apartheid. According to Shabalala, Nelson Mandela publicly stated that "the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo are South Africa's cultural ambassadors".
In 1998, the group released "The Best of Ladysmith Black Mambazo: The Star and the Wiseman", which was a compilation of their best songs. The compilation was certified triple platinum and the single reached #2 in the UK Pop Charts. In the year 2002, they released "Wenyukela" was a great success too. In the year 2005, they released "No Boundaries", which was a great success too and was also nominated for a Grammy Award. In the year 2006, Ladysmith Black Mambazo released the album "Long Walk to Freedom".
Joseph Shabalala also founded The Ladysmith Black Mambazo Foundation. The purpose behind it is to teach young Zulu South African children about their traditional culture and music; isicathamiya.
