Kirk Whalum was born on 11th July, 1958 with his hometown being Memphis in Tennessee. In Memphis, Kirk was a part of the church choir of his father. He was a lot inspired by the gospel, R&B, jazz and blues and other rich musical traditions of his birth city. At the Texas Southern University, he studied at a music school which he attended after getting a scholarship. At the University in 1979 Kirk formed a band and started playing in the local clubs. In 1984 Kirk was the lucky one for open for pianist Bob James in Houston and was able to impress James. James gave Kirk an invitation for playing on his next album.

1985 was the year when Kirk Whalum released his first solo album after signing with Columbia Records. The album was ' Floppy Disk' released with six tracks Floppy Disk, Rodeo, Time I Learned, Kyle's Smiles, Playing House and Afterthought.
Three years later his next album was released titled 'And You Know That!'. And in 1989 came the album 'Promise ' which were all produced by Bob James.

The early 1990s were marked by release of two more albums titled 'Caché' and ' In This Life '. with these albums Kirk Whalum received lot of commercial success and critical appreciation. He earned a nomination for Grammy Award with his duet Joined at the Hip with Bob James. In the year of 1997 Kirk was signed by Warner Brothers. Same year he release an album 'Colors' for Warner Brothers. This ten track album was another great piece of work by Kirk and had songs like The Back Porch, Daddy Loves You, Cannonnesque , After All This Time, If Only For One Night, Natchez, Strength In You, Open My Eyes, Escolhido (Chosen) and All I Need.
Kirk has also worked on many film scores such as Boyz in the Hood, The Prince of Tides, Cousins and Grand Canyon. He today enjoys adulation of many fans which he has been making all through the 1980s and 1990s. In 1998 his album titled 'For you' was a massive hit as one the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart it remained for two years on top position.
He got his second Grammy nomination with his 2000 album titled ' Hymns in the Garden ' and also gave him lot of critical praise.
