The man known as Kid Rock was born Robert James Ritchie on January 17, 1971 and raised in Romeo, Michigan. He began performing for his parents at parties as a kid, then covering songs by artists like Jim Croce and Johnny Cash. However, as soon as the 1980s rolled around hip hop began making headway into popular culture and he was hooked. He wanted to be a rapper and he began a long path, littered with plenty of adversity in the face of failure to one day sell Kid Rock tickets to his own headlining tour.

At the age of 17 he signed a contract with Jive Records, hoping to immediately cut a hit album and sell tickets to sold-out concerts.
Instead, he and his hip hop group joined the Straight From the Underground Tour. He and his friends were a minor act, but they got to share the stage with acclaimed rappers like Ice Cube, Yo-Yo, Too Short, and D-Nice. In 1990 he released his first album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast. The album did not go on to sell millions or create a buzz for tickets for a national tour. The album did have a track that resulted in the largest non-commercial radio fine of all time for the radio station SUNY Cortland Radio.
The dirty track and the lack of sales prompted Jive Records to release the artist. Kid Rock would respond by beginning to find group members to round out his crew. The search started with the addition of Uncle Kracker in 1991 and ended with the complete backing band Twisted Brown Trucker in 1994. At the time, Kid Rock was becoming a star in his home state of Michigan selling concert tickets and albums through his independent label. Soon after, another record company would give a chance to go national.

That company, Lava Records, signed him in 1997 on the advice from A&R man Andy Karp and the approval of company president Jason Flom. Kid Rock and his backing band released the album Devil Without a Cause on August 18, 1998. The album, again, did not sell. However, music fans with tickets to the Vans Warped Tour in 1998 began to request the rap/rocker on local radio stations, especially in the New England.
Soon, Kid Rock was DJing again, but the gigs helped him meet Carson Daly. The two became friends and the MTV host helped the Kid gain exposure as the DJ for TRL during the Spring Break Special. The exposure landed him a gold record by April 1999 and began to spark interest in seeing him perform live.
The final piece to Kid Rock's career to fall in place was a hit single. The song Bawitdaba was released in May 1999 and by June the gold album had gone platinum. Kid Rock joined Limp Bizkit and Staind selling tour tickets for the Limptropolis Tour. He was now a bona fide star, dominating the radio with tracks that combined Southern rock, country, and rap.
His three albums since Devil Without a Cause have all gone at least platinum in the U.S. and spurred tours that have taken him around the country to play before sold-out audiences. That first break out album went on to sell 11-times platinum and his next three studio albums would all reach at least platinum.
