Kansas was formed in the year 1970 in Topeka. The founding members of the band are Kerry Livgren as the guitarist, Dave Hope as the bassist and drummer Phil Ehart. They first played together while in high school. In 1971, Robbie Steinhardt, a classical trained violinist joined the band and they changed their name to White Clover. In 1972, with the arrival of vocalist and keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Richard Williams, the band reverted to the earlier name Kansas. The band spent their early part touring continuously and struggling for recognition. They, then built a strong record deal with the Kirshner label.

Their first debut LP appeared in 1974. It could gather only a small amount of fan base. They toured for it tirelessly and their fan base grew to such a point that when they released their third effort, Masque in the year 1975, it sold for a quarter of a million copies. In 1976 they released their fourth album, Leftoverture Truly. This album rose them to the stardom. Carry On Wayward Son was a smashing hit and the album reached to the Top Five and it sold for more than three million copies. In 1977 they released their next album Point of Know Return and it was even more successful than the before album. On the strength of the smash hit , Dust In the Wind, the album was instant hit. In the year 1978 live LP Two for the Show struggled to break the Top 40, its studio follow-up, Monolith, it was the band's first self produced effort and it reached the Top Ten. In that same year, Walsh released a solo record Schemer Dreamer. In the late 70s Kansas were the most popular bands due to the way they fused the complexity of British rock with an American heartland.

In 1980, Hope and Livgren began their solo venture Seeds of Change. Walsh then went on to form a new band Streets, while the rest of the members continued with the band, using vocalist John Elefante as Walsh replacement. The first Kansas LP, that was without Walsh was Vinyl Confessions released in the year 1982 and the single "Play the Game Tonight" was a huge hit. They released their next album Drastic Measures in 1983, thereafter they disbanded. It was in the year 1986, when Ehart again re-formed the band with Williams, Walsh, the most famed guitarist Steve Morse and bassist Billy Greer. Together they released Power, that scored a Top 20 hit with All I Wanted. They then followed up with In the Spirit of things in 1988, which was a major disaster. After a gap of seven years, they released their next effort, Freaks of Nature and in 1998 they released Always Never the Same. With the return of the founder, singer and songwriter Kerry Livgren, Somewhere to Elsewhere was released in 2000. What makes their music outstanding is the fusion of the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound.
