In his 50 years of career, he has many hits. He has won a Grammy Award as the producer of the "5th Dimension".

Born on November 7, 1942 in New York City, and then christened as John Ramistella, started playing the guitar at the age of eight. Rivers' first musical inspiration was his father. His father and uncle used to get together and play Italian folk songs on mandolin and guitar. But he was influenced very much by the distinctive music of Louisiana. His family had shifted from New York to Baton Rouge in Louisiana when he was five years old.

Rivers formed his own band, The Spades, when he was in junior high school in 1956 and made his first record at age 14. They toured Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama and became hot little band around Baton Rogue. Rivers' first recording was "Hey Little Girl", released by the Natchez, Mississippi-based Suede label. It sold well on The Spades' touring circuit.

During a trip back to New York in 1958, Rivers met Alan Freed and he got some recording contracts. Freed had asked him to change his name from John Ramistella to Johnny Rivers after the Mississippi River. Rivers got some recording contracts through Freed.

Rivers released three records from March 1958 to March 1959. "Baby Come Back" was released in March 1958. "Your First And Last Love" was released that August on the Dee Dee label and "You're The One" released in March 1959 on the Guyden label. But none of them was a hit.

He came back to Baton Rouge in 1959. He was touring as a solo act then with innovative Southern comedian Brother Dave Gardner and met Hank Williams' widow Audrey at a show in
Birmingham, Alabama. Audrey brought him to Nashville and got him a contract with Cub, a subsidiary of MGM Records. He recorded two singles. They did not sell either. Johnny stayed in Nashville as a songwriter and demo singer for $25 a demo. While in Nashville, Johnny worked alongside Roger Miller.

In 1960, Rivers met James Burton, the guitar player for Ricky Nelson band. Burton gave Nelson one of Johnny's songs. Nelson liked it and recorded it. In 1961, Rivers went to Los Angeles to meet Nelson and was offered to work as a song writer and musician.

Rivers got another opportunity for stage in 1963. Gazzari's owned by Bill Gazzariasked Rivers to play for a few days. Johnny agreed and history was made. Rivers met Lou Adler and Elmer Valentine there and played a role in his career. Adler became his producer and Valentine offered him a year's contract to appear at his new club, Whisky a Go Go, on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. That was a hit from the opening night.

Into 1966, Rivers has recorded, mostly live, many hits including "Maybellene", "Mountain of Love", "Midnight Special", and "Seventh Son". During that time, his "Poor Side of Town", reached Number one. In 1968, Rivers released "Realization", which many consider is his best album.

In 1970s, Rivers has recorded more hits, including "Rockin' Pneumonia - Boogie Woogie Flu" and covers of The Beach Boys' "Help Me Rhonda" and Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes". Rivers also started his own record company, Soul City Records and won a Grammy Award as the producer of the 5th Dimension. Rivers continued touring into the 1990s, and started recording again in 1998. Book your tickets online for his show.
