He got opportunity to play in the New York State Symphonic Orchestra when he was studying at The Julliard School. At that time, he was also playing piano in a rock band. Tesh did graduation in communications and music at North Carolina State University in 1975.

While in North Carolina, Tesh took part in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He worked as a news anchor at WTVD in Durham in the state. After graduation, Tesh left for Orlando in Florida to take a position in television. At the age of 23, he was the youngest reporter in New York's WCBS. In 1981, he joined CBS Sports as a commentator. He won Emmy Awards while in CBS Sports for his Pan American Games theme and the theme to the Tour de France.

In 1986, Tesh left CBS Sports to host the television show "Entertainment Tonight". He was there till 1996. While television remained his primary focus, Tesh continued writing and performing music, and in 1988 released his debut album, "Tour de France". That was not a great success for him though critics acclaimed his orchestral new age music. His further efforts in releasing 1989's "Garden City" gave him a wide audience.

Tesh also worked as a sportscaster for various events like the Tour de France bicycle race during 1983-1986 and Olympic gymnastics in 1992 and 1996. He also co-hosted the show, John & Leeza with Leeza Gibbons in 1990s.
