When Mayer was suddenly struck with a cardiac arrhythmia, at the age of seventeen, he had to spent one whole week in the hospital. While he was in the hospital, he started writing songs and when he was released from the hospital, he penned his first lyrics the night he got home. When he was nineteen years old, he enrolled himself in the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Later he started playing in the local coffeehouse and club circuit, in venues like Eddie's Attic. He released his first solo album, Inside Wants Out. He became popular and he started playing in th Atlanta circuit, and also in a number of shows, at venues like Eddie's Attic. It was in the year 2000, that proved to be a turning point in his life, he was playing at the South by Southwest Music Festival and this led to a recording contract with Aware Records, a subsidiary of Columbia. He then began recording his major-label debut, Room for Squares. He worked with producer John Alagia, who had the rapport of working with famous artists like Dave Matthews and the Ben Folds Five. The album spawned a number of radio hits, such as "No Such Thing", "Your Body Is A Wonderful", and ultimately, "Why Georgia". "Your Body Is a Wonderful" won him Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in the year 2003. He released the lucrative follow-up album Heavier Things in the same year. It was a commercial success and was critically acclaimed. It also topped the charts for a time. Till date, "Daughters" has been the most successful single and it also won him Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2005, beating Alicia Keys and Kanye West. He dedicated this award to his grandmother, who died in the year 2004. He also won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. His dedicated fan base grew day by day. He has also worked with hip hop artist and producer Kanye West.
In the year 2005, he collaborated with various blues artists such as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and jazz artist John Scofield and also toured with legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. In the same year he formed a band and named it John Mayer Trio with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, and together they play a combination of rock music and blues. The trio released a live album called "Try!". They also performed at the Tempe Music Festival in the year 2006. In 2006, on September, he released his next album "Continuum" with John Mayer Trio bassist Pino Palladino, where in they played the majority o the new songs for the album.
