Cliff was born James Chambers in Jamaica and made his big splash on the music scene with his hit single ‘Hurricane Hattie'. It was during this time that he struck up a relationship with producer Leslie Kong, a relationship that would last until Kong's death. Cliff began churning out a number of hits after that, including numbers like ‘Pride and Passion' and ‘King of Kings'. However, though these songs did very well inside Jamaica, they did not have a very good reception elsewhere. This is mainly because at the time, reggae was still virtually unknown to listeners of mainstream music.
Things changed for Cliff when he was one of the people chosen to represent Jamaica at the World Fair in 1964. It was here that he landed a record deal with Island Records that prompted him to move to Britain. His first international album was called Hard Road to Travel and it was a huge success. People loved the new sound of his record and the single ‘Waterfall' in particular garnered him much critical and commercial success.
Cliff kept on getting better with his follow up songs ‘Vietnam' and ‘Wonderful World, Beautiful People'. The song Vietnam was such a hit that it prompted even the great Bob Dylan to proclaim that it was the greatest protest song he had ever heard in his life. Following this, Cliff did some seminal work on the soundtrack to the movie The Harder They Come which included hits like ‘"Many Rivers to Cross', ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want it' and ‘Sittin' in Limbo'.

He later returned to the music scene and worked with Kool and the Gang before doing a number of solo efforts that included the talents of artists like Annie Lennox and Sting.
