The outfit was called The Swinging Pendulums and they were soon ruling the rough and tumble honky-tonk nightlife of Dallas. At sixteen he discovered the guitar work of artists like Jimi Hendrix, Freddy King and Muddy Waters. He discovered the blues and realized that he had found the groove that he had been looking for. Vaughn would later cite King, Waters, Guitar Watson, BB King and Albert King as being profound influences on his career.

Vaughn created a break-through band of sorts when he got together The Fabulous Thunderbirds. By this time, Vaughn had developed a unique and electric playing style of his own that was immediately recognizable. The Thunderbirds would become one of the most important bands with regards to white-man's blues. Though their albums are still regarded as important works, the band could not retain their contract and it was only in 1986 that they were able to come back, albeit with a more pop sound.
Vaughn would also do some very important work with his brother Stevie before embarking on his own solo career. His material is now more blues and rock based and he writes the songs himself. He has also recently toured with Bob Dylan in a killer combination of great music from two great legends.
