There was an investigation in the 1990s into organized crime's influence in the liquor business, which made Blavat's association with the Bruno-Scarfo crime family public, but the former Scarfo crime family member, Thomas A. DelGiorno testified that Blavat had regularly paid a "street tax" and had purchased a yacht for crime boss Nicodemo Scarfo for $40,000.
