Even then there was an opera scholarship waiting for her when she finished but Warnes decided instead to sing folk songs. She also became a member of the comedy show The Smothers Brothers. She added another feather to her acting cap when she took the role of Sheila in the production of Hair.

Warnes later met Leonard Cohen, a man who would have a profound effect on her and her music. Warnes toured with Cohen and would also do guest vocals on a number of his albums. After the success of her single ‘Right Time of the Night', Warnes began her Academy Award dream run. In 1980 she sang the winning song ‘It Goes Like It Goes' and the following year she sang ‘One More Hour' which was nominated for an Oscar.
She is perhaps best known for her famous duets- one with Joe Cocker called ‘Up Where We Belong' which featured in An Officer and a Gentlemen and also won an Oscar for best song. She also did a duet with Bill Medley called ‘I've Had the Time of my Life' for the movie Dirty Dancing. This duet also snagged an Oscar award.
