Born in August 25, 1967 in Belleville, Illinois, United States, he was the fourth child of Bob and Joe Ann Tweedy. He started playing the guitar at the age of 8, although his mum had bought it for him two years earlier. He met his friend Jay Farrar, in a English class at Belleville Township High School, and soon he joined Jay Farrar, and his brothers in a band called Plebes to qualify for a band competition. The band was later renamed The Primitive. The bands name was again changed from The Primitive to Uncle Tupelo. After quiting Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy formed the Wilco.

Tweedy does not have a typical musical style, it has varied from time to time. He has often been compared with Neil Young because of his nasal, emotional and scratchy vocal style. On stage he becomes altogether a different personality, it seems as if he has dual personality, one minute he shares lively humor with audience members the other minute he insists on absolute silence while performing. There is a marked difference in the way he conducts himself while performing solo and as a band.

Tweedy married Sue Miller in1995 after dating her for almost four years, they have two children who like their father are musically inclined.
