Jay Jenkins was born on September 28, 1977 in Columbia, South Carolina and nothing much has been revealed about his childhood. As a young adult it is believed that he worked as a cocaine dealer.

Young Jeezy came out with his maiden independent album ‘Thuggin' Under the Influence' (T.U.I.), in 2001 under the moniker Lil J. The album had guest artists like Kinky B, Fidank, and Lil Jon. The album was well appreciated and was followed by another independent release ‘Come Shop Wit' Me' in 2003. The two CD albums had entirely new songs along with a few songs from T.U.I. This album too did quite well; Bad Boy Records signed him and he also joined the Boyz n da Hood group in 2004.
The band came out with their eponymous album ‘Boyz n da Hood' in 2005 that reached #5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Around the same time Young Jeezy also came out with his solo album ‘Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101' which debuted at #2. The album featured guests artists like Young Buck, T.I., Trick Daddy, Akon, Mannie Fresh, Lil Scrappy, Bun B, Lloyd, Slick Pulla, & Lil Will.

In 2005, Young Jeezy appeared in quite a few popular hip-hop songs like Gucci Mane's ‘Icy' and Boyz n da Hood's ‘Dem Niggaz'. In 2006, he appeared in Christina Milian's single ‘Say I'. The same year, he came out with his second major label effort ‘The Inspiration'. The popular album had guest artists like Project Pat, T.I., Keyshia Cole, Three 6 Mafia, R. Kelly, Bloodraw and Slick Pulla. The first single ‘I Luv It' from the album peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album spawned two more singles ‘Bury Me a G' and ‘Go Getta'. The latter single, the club banger featured R. Kelly.
In 2007, Young Jeezy embarked on an extensive ‘I am the Street Dream' tour. The tour was highly successful. The same year Young Jeezy and his rap group USDA released the album ‘Cold Summe'. The USDA comprises of Young Jeezy, Slick Pulla, and Blood Raw.
